Square dancing is a fitness sport favored by the middle-aged and elderly. Ms. Zheng (pseudonym) is no exception. Although she is over 70 years old, she goes to square dancing with several other elderly sisters in the community every day. Recently, during a rehearsal, she did several splits and waist bends in succession, and her eyes suddenly became blind and she almost fell to the ground. She went to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for a check-up and found that it was because she suffered from high blood pressure and the excessive range of motion caused fundus hemorrhage. Dr. Han Mengyao, a specialist in fundus disease at Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital, conducted a comprehensive examination on Ms. Zheng. The doctor found vitreous hemorrhage in Ms. Zheng's fundus. Dr. Han Mengyao speculated that this might be because Ms. Zheng herself suffered from underlying diseases such as hypertension and had a history of fundus hemorrhage. During the dance, the large range of motion caused secondary new blood vessels to rupture, which in turn caused vitreous hemorrhage. In order to "save" the old woman's vision, Dr. He Junwen, deputy chief physician of the hospital's fundus disease department, performed a vitrectomy on her. The entire operation went very smoothly. Considering that Ms. Zheng had a long history of hypertension, the doctor recommended that she actively control her hypertension. During the follow-up examination, Ms. Zheng's left eye vision had recovered from 0.2 to 0.6, and the old woman and her family were very happy. Dr. Han Mengyao said that high blood pressure was one of the main culprits that caused Ms. Zheng to suffer from vitreous hemorrhage. Although there are no blood vessels in the vitreous, there are a large number of blood vessels in the retina adjacent to the vitreous. If the patient has vascular diseases, it is easy to cause vitreous hemorrhage. Dr. Han Mengyao said: "The patient had a history of fundus hemorrhage. During strenuous exercise, blood pressure rose sharply, causing new blood vessels to rupture and causing vitreous hemorrhage. As middle-aged and elderly people age, their eye functions deteriorate and the eyes themselves become more fragile." Dr. Han Mengyao reminded that exercise is good for health, but the key is moderation and persistence. Elderly people should follow scientific and professional guidance when exercising, do strenuous exercise within their ability, avoid doing movements that have too much impact on the head, face, and eyes, and avoid blind fitness or incorrect fitness, so as not to cause eye problems and affect vision. In addition, elderly patients with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and other diseases should actively treat the primary disease and go to the hospital for fundus examination regularly. If they encounter problems such as decreased vision and fundus hemorrhage, they must seek medical attention in time. |
