When Myopia and Presbyopia Coexist

You can't see clearly if you're close, and you can't see if you're far away!

Presbyopia is medically known as presbyopia . Just like wrinkles on the face, it occurs with age and is a physiological visual degeneration phenomenon.

Presbyopia and myopia are two different types of eye problems! The principle of presbyopia is that as we age, the lens gradually hardens and thickens, and the adjustment ability of the ciliary muscle decreases, resulting in reduced focusing ability, causing unclear vision at close range, but not affecting vision at a distance.

There are two reasons for myopia. One is that the axial length of the eyeball exceeds normal; the other is that the curvature of the cornea or lens is too large. Therefore, the cause of myopia is a problem with the refraction of the eyeball.

01 Presbyopia cannot offset myopia!

The symptoms of myopia are "blurred vision at a distance, clear vision at near", while the symptoms of presbyopia are the opposite, that is, "clear vision at a distance, blurry vision at near". The so-called myopia and presbyopia can be offset when looking at close objects, but there is no way to offset them when looking at distant objects.

Even if some people see objects more clearly at close range due to the combined effects of presbyopia and myopia, this is only because the myopia reduces the blurring effect of presbyopia at close range . In this case, myopia and presbyopia still exist separately and need to be treated separately.

02What should I do if I have presbyopia?

Wearing reading glasses with appropriate degrees is the most reliable and effective method of correcting presbyopia, especially for the "early visual aging group" around 40 or 50 years old. They often have to look at computers and work at desks. Not wearing reading glasses will lead to more serious visual fatigue and aggravate the loss of ciliary muscle accommodation.

People with both presbyopia and myopia can be fitted with special glasses, such as bifocal glasses, progressive multifocal glasses, etc. However, these glasses are not permanent once they are fitted. With age increase and the occurrence of cataracts, the degree of myopia and presbyopia will change, and they also need to be checked and replaced regularly.

03What should I do if I don’t want to wear glasses?

There are a variety of surgical methods available to treat presbyopia.

Currently, there are corneal and lens surgeries for myopia and presbyopia. For patients with myopia and presbyopia who are unwilling to wear glasses or frequently change glasses, it is recommended to seek medical treatment in time. After accurate assessment of refractive status and personal eye habits, the most appropriate correction method can be selected to regain clear vision and improve quality of life.

The cataract and presbyopia specialist at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University reminds that the presbyopia of myopia may be late, but it will not be absent. Do not buy inaccurate and poorly made reading glasses on the roadside for convenience, or use a magnifying glass to solve the problem! Wearing inappropriate reading glasses will cause visual fatigue, headaches, nausea and other discomfort symptoms. If you want to solve the problem of myopia and presbyopia through surgery, you need to go to a regular hospital for a detailed eye examination and evaluation to further confirm whether you meet the conditions for surgery.
