School is about to start. At what degree of myopia does my child need to wear glasses?

School is about to start, and many parents are asking: "My child can still see the blackboard clearly now, so there is no need for him to wear glasses, right?"

At what degree of myopia do you need to wear glasses? What signs should alert you to myopia?

At what degree of myopia do you need to wear glasses?

Myopia refers to the situation where when the eyes are in a relaxed state, parallel light rays pass through the eye's refractive system and focus in front of the retina.

1. Preschoolers

1.1 Preschool children with myopia > -1.00 D who have myopia symptoms need refractive correction; if they are asymptomatic, they can be temporarily observed and followed up every 6 months.

1.2. According to expert experience and clinical observation, myopia ≤ -1.00 D needs to be corrected.

2. School-age children

2.1 For children who are sensitive to and have symptoms of vision loss, any degree of myopic refractive error should be corrected.

2.2 According to expert experience and clinical observation, myopia of ≤-1.00 D requires correction.

2.3 Children with intermittent exotropia or myopic refractive errors with large exotropia should receive full-time optical correction.

2.4 Follow-up is generally conducted every 6 months. If the degree of vision changes by more than 0.50 D compared with the last follow-up, a new prescription is required. However, if the degree of vision changes by only 0.25 D and the visual acuity can be significantly improved after correction, a new prescription can be given.

In short, children should wear appropriate glasses according to their situation to prevent them from having difficulty seeing far away and suffering from visual fatigue which may cause myopia to worsen faster.

Wear glasses for distant purposes but not for close purposes?

Many people often make the mistake of wearing their glasses for far-away vision but not for near vision after getting them fitted.

Both normal eyes and myopic eyes wearing glasses (with appropriate degrees) need to adjust their eyes when looking at close objects. By adjusting, the focal length of the eyes is changed and the focus of light is moved from far away to the close objects we are looking at, so that we can see clearly.

When a myopic person does not wear glasses, the focus of the eyes is close, and the eyes can see clearly without adjusting. However, if the eyes are lazy for a long time, the adjustment function of the eyes will decrease, and it will also affect the ability of the eyes to focus. Under normal circumstances, when looking at close objects, the eyes will turn inward to a certain extent, which is the focus function.

Therefore, except when the doctor has special instructions for not wearing glasses, it is recommended that myopic children wear glasses both for near and far vision.

What are the signs that you should be alert to myopia?

1. Looking at things closer: Children look at things very closely. For example, their eyes are very close when watching TV, reading, or playing with electronic products, they bend their backs when doing homework, etc.

They cannot see clearly at a normal distance and must move their eyes closer to objects to see clearly. They like to get closer to the screen. The eyes are in a state of abnormal adjustment and tension spasm, which makes it difficult to see far away. On the one hand, it will form pseudomyopia, and on the other hand, it is more likely to cause visual fatigue and accelerate the formation and progression of true myopia.

2. Like to squint, frown, tilt the head, look up to see things, and often pull the corners of the eyes: Children's squinting, frowning, and pulling the corners of the eyes can make the eyelids cover part of the pupil, less diffuse light, and improve vision. Pulling the corners of the eyes can also flatten the cornea to change the refractive power. These can temporarily improve the vision of children with mild myopia. Similarly, tilting the head and looking up can also change the refractive state of children to a certain extent, so that they can see more clearly.

3. Frequent eye rubbing and frequent blinking: Some children experience eye discomfort due to myopia and cannot see objects clearly, and visual fatigue caused by excessive use of eyes. These will cause children to rub their eyes repeatedly with their hands. Frequent eye rubbing may aggravate children's myopia and astigmatism.

4. Other abnormal behaviors: Children do not copy their homework neatly, or become irritable or even hate studying; they become unwilling to greet people and become easily irritable; their relationship with other children becomes unharmonious, etc.

These changes may be warning signs of myopia. When children cannot see clearly, they may become anxious.

If the above signs of myopia are found, it is recommended that parents take their children to a regular hospital or optometry institution for an eye examination , mainly including visual acuity, fundus, eye axis, refractive power, etc., to rule out organic eye lesions and pseudomyopia. Mydriasis refraction is a diagnostic examination method that plays an important role in the prevention and control of myopia in children.
