Why do non-smokers also get lung cancer?

According to the World Cancer Report 2020 released by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC):

In 2020, among every 100 new cancer cases in my country, 18 were lung cancer; among every 100 people who lost their lives to cancer, 23 were caused by lung cancer.

As we all know, smoking is the biggest factor causing lung cancer . The incidence of lung cancer in smokers is more than 10 times that of non-smokers! 85% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking.

But many patients are non-smokers, love sports, and have good living habits. Why can non-smokers also get lung cancer?

Studies show that the following 5 groups of people are also at high risk of lung cancer!

1. People who are exposed to passive smoking

Although they do not smoke, many people live in second-hand smoke or third-hand smoke environments for a long time and are also exposed to passive smoking.

Secondhand smoke is a clear carcinogen . Studies have shown that if the husband smokes, the wife's chance of getting lung cancer is more than twice that of the general population.

2. People who inhale too much cooking fumes

We all know that PM2.5 particles are harmful to the human body, and the fumes produced by cooking will instantly make the indoor PM2.5 value explode, which can quickly soar dozens of times. These fumes also contain harmful substances such as benzopyrene and volatile nitrosamines, which pose great harm to human health.

3. People who stay in places with high air pollution levels all year round

Long-term exposure to industrial pollution such as asbestos and radon at work or living in an area with high levels of air pollution may also increase the risk of lung cancer.

4. People with a family history of malignant tumors

If a parent or sibling has lung cancer, you are twice as likely to develop lung cancer compared to people with no family history of lung cancer.

5. People with COPD

COPD can cause repeated lung inflammation, providing fertile ground for the development of cancer cells. Moreover, in the process of repeated damage and self-repair of lung tissue, a large number of "free radicals" are released, which induce cell DNA mutations and increase the incidence of lung cancer.
