A 5-year-old girl frequently wets the bed. The problem is caused by a wrong operation by her mother. Many people are doing the same thing.

Xiaoxiao, 5 years old, recently had a shameful thing - bedwetting. Her mother took her to the hospital for a checkup, but no obvious abnormality was found. Her mother was puzzled: Xiaoxiao had not been getting up at night since she was 3 years old, so why did she become more and more ignorant as she grew older? By chance, Xiaoxiao's mother found out the real reason for Xiaoxiao's bedwetting in an inadvertent conversation with the doctor. It turned out to be a mistake made by her mother...

I went to see a doctor for rhinitis but found a new problem

Xiaoxiao is only 5 years old this year, but she has been suffering from rhinitis for a long time. With the recent change of seasons, Xiaoxiao's rhinitis recurred, with nasal congestion, runny nose, cough... It didn't get better for half a month, so her mother took her to the Otolaryngology Department of Hangzhou First People's Hospital. After doing relevant examinations on Xiaoxiao, the chief physician Liu Xiang found that Xiaoxiao suffered from chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis, and her adenoids were also enlarged. Xiaoxiao was recommended to receive symptomatic treatment first.

During the consultation, Xiaoxiao's mother casually mentioned that her daughter had been sleeping poorly recently, snoring badly, and wetting the bed frequently...

After further detailed questioning, Dr. Liu Xiang finally found out the truth. It turned out that Xiaoxiao's mother had read a popular science article about adenoids a few months ago. The article said that if a child breathes with his mouth open for a long time, he will develop an adenoid face, which will affect his appearance. After returning home, the mother paid attention to Xiaoxiao who was sleeping soundly at night and found that her daughter was indeed breathing with her mouth open. Seeing Xiaoxiao sleeping soundly with her mouth open, the mother was anxious, fearing that the child would "grow crooked" and develop an adenoid face.

After searching online, the mother found a so-called "net-famous magic tool" - a mouth-closing patch. The advertisement said that after applying it, it can correct the child's habit of breathing with the mouth open when sleeping. Xiaoxiao's mother decisively bought it for Xiaoxiao to use. After using it, she found that the so-called mouth-closing patch was not so magical. It didn't stick at all. Every day when she woke up, it fell off early. For this reason, the mother applied two more...

Blindly "shutting up" has serious consequences

"Stop using it!" Hearing this, Dr. Liu Xiang quickly stopped him, "Based on the child's condition and the test results, it is not appropriate to use the closure patch."

On the computer, Liu Xiang opened the X-ray of Xiaoxiao's nasal cavity and saw that Xiaoxiao's nasal cavity and sinuses had become "flocculated" and the adenoids in the nasopharynx were significantly enlarged, which meant that Xiaoxiao's nasal cavity and nasopharynx were severely blocked. "When the blockage was so severe, the child's mouth was taped and he couldn't breathe."

Combined with what Xiaoxiao's mother said about Xiaoxiao's frequent bedwetting recently, Liu Xiang speculated that Xiaoxiao's bedwetting was related to the "shut up sticker" her mother put on her. Xiaoxiao's nasal cavity was blocked and she had to breathe through her mouth to get oxygen, but her mother, who was unaware of the situation, blocked her daughter's compensatory breathing channel, which caused Xiaoxiao's brain to be deprived of oxygen during sleep. Brain hypoxia is also one of the causes of urinary incontinence.

Liu Xiang said that he had encountered more than one case in clinical practice. For some children with enuresis, the bed-wetting problem was solved after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, as well as standardized treatment for allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. This is because the oxygen supply to the brain increased after the overly enlarged adenoids were removed.

Whether to use the shut-up patch depends on the situation

Liu Xiang said that children are in the growth and development period. If they breathe with their mouths open for a long time, it will indeed cause adenoids to appear and make the children "ugly". The earlier the intervention, the better. However, it is not advisable to make children close their mouths by applying "mouth-closing stickers". Mouth-closing stickers are only suitable for a small number of children who have bad sleeping habits. The premise of use is that the nasal cavity must be fully ventilated. However, the reason why most children breathe with their mouths open is that the pharynx and nasal cavity are narrow, resulting in insufficient breathing. If the mouth is sealed, the breathing will be even more insufficient. In the long run, it will lead to sleep hypoxemia, and it will also affect the growth and intellectual development of children, and there may be a risk of suffocation. Liu Xiang said that once a child is found to breathe with his mouth open while sleeping, he should be evaluated by a regular hospital. Mouth-closing breathing caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids, rhinitis, sinusitis, and narrow pharynx needs to be improved through standardized treatment or even surgery. Most children can basically "close their mouths to sleep" after solving the problem of nasal obstruction. In short, don't trust the so-called "folk remedies" on the Internet. Once you find any abnormalities, you should choose to go to a regular hospital for medical treatment.
