Yaowa Quiz | Can diabetic patients use glucose injection?

Medicine Baby Analysis

Due to the absolute or relative lack of insulin in the body, diabetic patients cannot effectively metabolize and utilize glucose when infused, which will cause blood sugar to rise. Therefore, in order to avoid excessive glucose intake, diabetic patients generally do not choose glucose solution.

However, for diabetic patients, glucose solution must be used in the following situations: some drugs must be dissolved in glucose before injection, otherwise it will cause changes in the properties and effects of the drugs, and even cause serious adverse reactions; for patients with heart failure, too much saline during infusion will increase the burden on the heart; patients with high blood pressure should reduce sodium intake; for patients with renal failure, large amounts of saline infusion can cause hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis; some patients need to infuse glucose to supplement calories when their food intake is restricted for some reason. Therefore, diabetic patients are not completely unable to use glucose, but they cannot use too much.

Without changing the routine treatment of diabetic patients, insulin can be used clinically to neutralize the glucose in the infusion. The general ratio of glucose to insulin is about 5:1. The conventional usage is to add 5U of insulin to 500ml of 5% glucose injection. Blood sugar needs to be monitored during the application process.
