I still have lochia after a full month of cesarean section

After giving birth, some residual substances will be discharged from the uterus and vagina of pregnant women. This stuff is a mixture of residual fetal tissue, shed uterine wall and blood, and is usually discharged within a certain period of time after giving birth. If the discharge time of postpartum lochia exceeds the normal period, it is considered as unclean lochia. So, is it normal for a baby born by caesarean section to still have postpartum lochia even after one month?

It is abnormal for a baby to have bright red postpartum lochia when he is one month old. Pregnant women who have cesarean sections, like those who choose natural births, need to expel postpartum lochia from their bodies after giving birth, which usually lasts up to 6 weeks. However, the bloody lochia with blood clots usually lasts for 1 week, and then the lochia will turn into a slurry and take about 2 weeks to be discharged. Eventually, the lochia turns milky white and is discharged again every 2 to 3 weeks. When the baby is one month old, it is abnormal if the lochia is still bright red, but it is mostly normal if it is milky white.

In addition, pregnant women should also pay more attention to the smell and amount of postpartum lochia. Normal postpartum lochia will have a slightly fishy smell, but it will not have a foul smell or a special odor. The duration of lochia discharge varies from pregnant woman to pregnant woman, most of the time it takes is 4 to 6 weeks, with a total output between 250ml and 500ml. If the smell of postpartum lochia is abnormal or excessive, you should be careful.

Pregnant women can go to the hospital for a follow-up abdominal ultrasound about 42 days after giving birth to observe the recovery of the uterus and see if there is any abnormal bleeding. During the period of lochia discharge, do not have sexual intercourse, rest more, clean your private parts frequently, and wash your underwear frequently.

What should I do if my mother has persistent lochia after cesarean section?

1. If the uterus is not fully repaired, and the postpartum lochia increases, becomes red, and lasts longer, you should see a doctor as soon as possible and be given uterotonics. If combined with infection, postpartum lochia has a foul odor and there is uterine tenderness, antibiotics should be given to control the infection.

2. Generally, the main treatment for increased lochia in postpartum women is antibiotics, and the condition will improve if combined with traditional Chinese medicine to promote uterine contractions and recovery, such as Motherwort Granules.

3. If there are residual embryos, fetal membranes, or decidua remnants and blood clots that are difficult to discharge, a curettage is required.

4. If a serious infection occurs, internal bleeding occurs during cesarean section, or the hemorrhagic shock is uncontrollable, surgical treatment is required.

5. When lochia continues to be discharged from the vagina, the mother should pay attention to the cleanliness of the vulva and wash the sanitary napkins frequently. In addition, pregnant women's underwear should be washed frequently and the vulva should be washed with warm water once a day.
