DSCC: Global foldable phone shipments are expected to grow 45% to 18.6 million units in 2023

Recently, according to a DSCC research report, in the latest updated Quarterly Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment and Technology Report, DSCC saw at least 37 different models of products from 10 different brands will be shipped in 2023.

Due to lower prices, better performance improvements, and camera and screen improvements, DSCC expects foldable smartphones to grow 45% to 18.6M (18.6 million units) in 2023, and foldable phone panel shipments are expected to rise 52% to 23.2M (23.2 million pieces). In 2023, more foldable phones will adopt polarizer-free technology (CoE), which can significantly improve display efficiency, reduce display thickness, and improve the durability of foldable displays . Although CoE was first applied to foldable panels by Samsung Display, in 2023, many products with up and down folding forms are expected to use polarizer-free solutions provided by Chinese panel manufacturers. At the same time, the penetration rate of the CoE solution is expected to rise from 24% of the foldable display market in 2022 to 38% in 2023.

Another interesting finding is the multi-fold display (Z-type). Compared with the rollable/scroll phones that are more popular in the consumer market, multi-fold (Multi-Fold) is relatively easy to achieve technically. Multi-Folds can bring larger displays to the smartphone market and are compatible with better tablet performance. Chinese brands are also already pre-researching multi-fold products, which are expected to be launched in 2024 .

Although the capacity base of the foldable display market is not large enough, Chinese brands are trying their best to lower prices and plan high-end and low-end models to cope with different consumer markets. At the same time, brands such as Transsion, which focus on overseas emerging markets, are also actively planning foldable mobile phone products. Research shows that 2023 will be a year of rising popularity for the foldable market, especially for Chinese folding brands.
