IDC: China's smartphone shipments in Q2 2021 were approximately 78.1 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 11.0%

Market research company IDC today released the 2021 Q2 Chinese mobile phone market report, with Vivo ranking first in China and Honor re-entering the top five in China. According to the report, China's smartphone market shipments in the second quarter of 2021 were approximately 78.1 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 11.0%. In the first half of 2021, the overall domestic market shipments were 164 million units, a year-on-year increase of 6.5%.

IDC said that the growth driver of the market in the first half of the year came entirely from the better market environment in the first quarter compared with the same period last year. However, with the absence of the original blockbuster products in the second quarter, the existing products failed to fully stimulate the replacement demand of most users, resulting in a decline in market attention. After the Spring Festival peak season, the terminal flow rate continued to be lower than expected, and many leading manufacturers had to slow down the pace of shipments in the second quarter.

IDC said that from the perspective of the market structure, among the top five manufacturers, the top four have seen significant growth compared with last year, but they still cannot make up for the sharp decline in the overall market, including Huawei, of other manufacturers.

On the one hand, this reflects that products with increasingly homogenized hardware and functions are losing appeal to consumers at an accelerating rate; on the other hand, it also shows that smartphones have long been a "must-have" product that everyone needs, and the weight of their brand appeal and social decorative attributes is continuing to increase.

In terms of specific manufacturer rankings, vivo shipped 18.6 million units, ranking first in China with a market share of 23.8%.

OPPO shipped 16.5 million units, ranking second with a market share of 21.1%.

Xiaomi ranked third with shipments of 13.04 million units and a market share of 17.2%.

Apple ranked fourth with 8.6 million units shipped and a market share of 10.9%.

After becoming completely independent, Honor entered the top five this time, with shipments of 6.9 million units and a market share of 8.9%.

PS: The top five brands account for 64% of the domestic market share. Huawei is no longer in the lead, and the market is much lonelier. The space vacated by Huawei cannot be completely filled by other manufacturers.
