Although the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way consumers socialize and interact, it has not stopped them from looking for romantic relationships and new friendships. Sensor Tower recently released the "2021 Dating App Report", revealing the latest trends in US dating apps.

Young users are using dating apps

Younger users are driving growth in social apps, including dating apps. In the first three quarters of 2020, the average age of users of the top 25 dating apps in the United States was the lowest in three years.

While the average age of dating app users has been falling steadily over the past three years, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend. Developers have responded by adding features to their apps that appeal to younger users, such as live streaming, and by experimenting with advertising on networks such as MoPub and Vungle, which are typically popular for mobile games.

Bumble nearly doubles market share

Ahead of its 2021 IPO, Bumble has solidified its position as the second-largest dating app in the U.S. In 2020, it had a 19% market share, nearly double its 10% share in 2017 and more than its next four competitors combined.

Over the past two years, Bumble has ranked second in app store installs, with a steady 11% market share.

Chat app revenue growth

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted consumers to look for alternative ways to socialize, leading to a surge in interest in apps specifically designed for finding friends and meeting new people. Top chat apps like Tagged and MeetMe saw a surge in revenue in the second quarter of 2020.

While Yubo was the only app in this group to maintain quarterly growth after its initial boost, revenue for the top apps in this subcategory remains above pre-pandemic levels.
