Communicus: 83% of children aged 6 to 9 own tablets

As children move from childhood to adolescence, we would assume that their use of advanced devices would increase. However, a July 2014 Communicus study found that this is not necessarily the case for phones and tablets. Among American children aged 2 to 17, tablet use peaked among 6- to 9-year-olds, and although the next age group (10-12) ranked second, 2- to 5-year-olds ranked third.

The situation is different for tablets. Children aged 10-12 rank first, accounting for 57%. However, children still have a higher proportion than teenagers, 46% vs. 42%. Although children aged 2 to 5 rank last, 33% of them have tablets, and 50% of them have their parents buy them.

Among children who do not have a tablet, 51% pester their parents to buy one for them, and among children who have a tablet, 51% ask their parents to buy the latest model.

Communicus reports that 60% of children bring tablets to school. An earlier Harris Poll survey for Pearson showed that 48% of children bring tablets to school, with usage higher among younger children. 56% of American elementary school Internet users use tablets at school, and 34% of children use them twice as much on weekends as on weekdays. In contrast, 48% of middle school students and 45% of high school students use tablets at school.
