From PC to mobile

Mobile is increasingly becoming the main platform for people to access the Internet. This is nothing new. What is important is the pace of this change. It took decades for TV to reach 100,000 sales, while it took only 4 years for smartphones. 26 million Internet users only use mobile platforms to access Facebook.

The growth in mobile usage is in sync with the growth in video viewing. Facebook currently has 8 billion video views per day, 75% of which are viewed on mobile platforms, and video viewing in the UK has increased by 88% year-on-year.

These numbers are huge and they also show what is happening on social media.

The growth of visual communication

It’s no surprise that sites like Snapchat and Instagram have grown rapidly, as people increasingly enjoy communicating with other people visually.

The best proof of this is that the Oxford Dictionary included emojis in 2015. In fact, the use of visual symbols such as emojis on Facebook has increased by 388% year-on-year.

People are now more willing to share pictures and videos, and Couchman predicts that 9 out of 10 Facebook posts in 2018 will be videos or pictures.

Discover instead of search

The content world has become more competitive as people are obsessed with discovery. With mobile devices giving Internet users access to all the content on the web, it’s important for publishers to stand out from the crowd.
