Piper Jaffray: Survey shows Instagram is the most popular social networking site for American teenagers

Instagram is gradually replacing Facebook and Twitter among American teenagers.

In Piper Jaffray's biannual survey of American teenagers, 32% of teenagers considered Instagram to be the most important social networking site, while only 24% and 14% of teenagers considered Twitter and Facebook to be the most important social networking sites, respectively.

Market research firm BI Intelligence analyzed data from more than a dozen sources in a research report, and the results showed that social media user demographics and preference data are still changing.

The BII research report also reached the following important conclusions:

Pinterest has the greatest influence among female users. In a Pew survey conducted at the end of 2014, 42% of female Internet users in the United States claimed to be Pinterest users, while only 13% of male Internet users were Pinterest users.

Instagram has become the most important and most used social networking site for American teenagers. In a Piper Jaffray survey of American teenagers conducted every six months, 32% of teenagers believe that Instagram is the most important social networking site, while only 24% and 14% of teenagers believe that Twitter and Facebook are the most important social networking sites, respectively.

Snapchat, Vine and Tumblr have the youngest user bases of all social networking sites. According to market research firm comScore, 45% of Snapchat's adult users are between the ages of 18 and 24, followed by Vine (28%) and Tumblr (28%).

LinkedIn usage is highest among the highly educated and high-income users. According to Pew, 44% of Americans with annual incomes over $75,000 use LinkedIn.

Messaging apps are also becoming more popular, but not many young people use them. According to a survey by Edison Research and Triton Digital, only 7% of Americans aged 12 and over use WhatsApp.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even Pinterest are becoming more and more aging users. According to comScore, less than two-fifths of Facebook's adult users are between the ages of 18 and 34.
