The following series of charts reflect the volume, price and income of SMS in Spain.

From these figures, we can see that SMS revenue peaked at the end of 2008 and has been declining since then, from 450 million euros per quarter in 2008 to 171 million euros in the third quarter of 2012, equivalent to 100% of the operating profit of telecom operators. The impact is imaginable. The culprits for this are Whatsapp, iMessage and free messaging services provided by Facebook. It is said that 97% of Spanish smartphone users have installed the Whatsapp application. In China, WeChat has also had a great impact on the SMS business of telecom operators. Currently, WeChat users have exceeded 300 million. While the SMS volume of telecom operators has declined, the text messaging business based on IP is growing rapidly. Whatsapp claims that its message volume exceeded 18 billion during the New Year. In October, Apple announced that iMessage had sent 300 billion messages in the past 12 months. Global SMS traffic is still growing, and is expected to reach 9.6 trillion in 2012. However, the latest research shows that SMS's share of global mobile information traffic will drop from 64% in 2011 to 42% in 2016.
