Amazon Appstore downloads exceed hundreds of millions

Amazon's Android app store has seen a dramatic growth since the Kindle Fire launched in November 2011, with the number of developers publishing apps tripling and the number of apps tripling. In addition, Amazon says hundreds of millions of apps have been downloaded from the Appstore.

Of course, these figures pale in comparison to Google, as Android's official marketplace, Google Play, has 600,000 apps and more than 20 billion downloads. “Our apps generate more than 50% of revenue compared to other platforms, which in turn has helped us scale our business very quickly,” said Simon Newstead, founder and CEO of Frenzoo, publisher of Style Me Girl for Android and iOS, while TinyCo, publisher of the Tiny Monsters, Tiny Village and Tiny Pet games, also claimed that Amazon revenue is better than “other platforms”.

Of course, one reason for this is Amazon's "in-app purchase" mechanism, which allows Android to generate more cash than app purchases, and Amazon's huge consumer base allows shopping through the company's patented one-click purchase method. In addition, there is also the fact that Amazon carefully selects the applications on its platform to ensure that the best applications are presented to consumers.

Amazon is touting its app store ahead of the expected September 6 launch of the new Kindle Fire. The old version of the device is already selling out, with nearly 5 million sold since last Christmas, and the new version is expected to boost sales significantly. Some analysts say Amazon could produce 20 million Kindle Fires in 2012.

Google is not happy that Amazon is, in a sense, robbing it with its own app store. If the new Kindle Fire sells tens of millions of units, it will be the most powerful Android tablet ever. And that will make Google nervous.
