Stenvall Skoeld: China accounts for 18% of iOS downloads worldwide, but only 3% of revenue

According to the latest report from market research firm Stenvall Skoeld, in the second quarter of this year, Chinese users contributed 18% of downloads to Apple's App Store, but only 3% of revenue. In comparison, the United States contributed 28% of downloads to the App Store, and 42% of revenue.

According to data from Stenvall Skoeld, the Chinese market contributed $37 million in revenue to Apple's App Store in the second quarter, a year-on-year increase of 105%. This year's full-year revenue is expected to increase by 98% to $171 million.

China is Apple's second largest app market in terms of download volume. But it is worth noting that the vast majority of iOS apps downloaded by Chinese users are free apps. Every time an iOS app is downloaded in the Chinese market, Apple's revenue contribution is about $0.03, far lower than the average level of $0.19.

But this is still better than Google Play, which currently does not support paid downloads in the Chinese market.

Industry insiders believe that the low revenue of iOS apps in China may be related to piracy: a considerable proportion of Chinese iPhone users obtain free apps through jailbreaking. Stenvall Skoeld estimates that the jailbreaking rate of Chinese iPhone users reaches 40%. But he also admits that piracy is only one of the reasons why iOS apps have low revenue in the Chinese market.

China became the world's largest smartphone market last year, and the latest data shows that China's mobile Internet users have reached 388 million.

According to data from market research firm Canalys, China's smartphone shipments in the second quarter increased by 199% year-on-year, accounting for about 27% of the world's total. Samsung accounted for 17% of the market share, followed by local manufacturers ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei, while Apple has slipped to fifth place.

Stenvall Skoeld's report shows that there are 21 million iPhone users in the Chinese market, more than half of which are located in urban areas such as Beijing and Shanghai.
