Nielsen: The average American smartphone user has 41 apps

A year ago, less than 40% of mobile phone users in the United States owned a smartphone; now, this number has exceeded 50%. Android and iOS devices also occupy 80% of the smartphone market in the United States, and the number of users has increased from 38 million a year ago to about 84 million. Both figures show that there is no doubt that the era of mobile applications has arrived!

Neilson collected statistics on the number of mobile app (Android and iOS) downloads in the United States in the past two years and came to the following conclusions:

• The average number of mobile app downloads increased by 28% over last year, and the average number of apps installed per user increased from 32 to 41;
• The time users spend on these apps has increased by 10%, from 37 minutes last year to 39 minutes this year.
• Personal information security is still a concern for users, with 73% of users concerned about it this year, compared to 70% last year;

• From March last year to March this year, the total time users spent surfing the Internet on mobile devices increased by 44%, while the time users spent in apps increased by 133%;
• The top 50 apps are still the most popular 5: Facebook, YouTube, Google Play, Google Search and Gmail. Except for Facebook, the other 4 are all owned by Google.
• The remaining 45 apps in the top 50 are also being downloaded and used by more and more users, with the number of downloads increasing by nearly 20% compared to last year;
• Applications are showing a long tail trend: in March 2011, Android and iOS users spent 74% of their time on the top 50 applications, but now it is only 58%.
