Free Internet calling Viber releases desktop app: Total users exceed 200 million

On the morning of May 8, 2013, according to the American technology blog TheNextWeb, the free Internet calling software Viber announced on Tuesday that its users have exceeded 200 million. The company also announced the launch of desktop applications on Windows and Mac OS X platforms that day, supporting video calling services (Beta version) for the first time. (Go to download)

In 2010, Viber first launched its free Internet calling service on iOS, and then quickly expanded to other mobile platforms. So far, Viber has released applications on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Symbian and Samsung's Bada system.

Viber announced on Tuesday that it has launched a desktop application, Viber Desktop, on PC and Mac platforms. The application is as comprehensive and easy to install as its mobile application. Users can transfer calls between desktop and mobile, receive and send messages simultaneously, and delete conversations simultaneously. Most importantly, Viber has launched the video calling function for the first time with this desktop application. Currently, users can only make video calls through the desktop application, but Viber is likely to launch this feature on mobile platforms in the future.

"People now spend a lot of time on their phones, but they often look at their phones at home or in the office, where they have their computer next to them," said Talmon Marco, CEO of Viber. "The launch of the Viber desktop app allows users to easily switch between mobile platforms and computers."

At the end of last year, Viber had 140 million users, which increased to 175 million at the end of February this year. Today, Viber announced that its users have exceeded 200 million, covering 193 countries. Currently, Viber supports 27 languages.
