Valentine's Day 2013: Finding Love with Apps

Today, while those who are not single rush to stores to buy Valentine's Day cards and gifts for their significant others, single women are looking to their smartphones to find their soulmate. Just in time for Valentine's Day, Flurry used a smartphone dating app as an example to explore the demographics and usage behaviors of the user population. We found that male users are typically nearly twice as active as female users of apps targeting male and female dating. For analysis, we studied the top 20 dating apps with a combined 17 million active users and found that there were more than 2.1 billion sessions in January 2013.

Female users may want to download an Android dating app to increase their chances of dating based on their own needs. When we compared the user composition of a sample dating app on iOS and Android phones, we found that active users of Android dating apps tend to be more male.

Young people looking for their own Valentine’s Day (or those looking for a Valentine’s Day for young people) are also likely to download a dating app on their Android device. After looking at sample dating apps available on both Android and iOS, we found that adult users on Android dating apps are more likely to be under 25 years old than those on iOS.

Millions of people use dating apps regularly. They typically use them eight times a week, spending 71 seconds each time. Gay men who use dating apps are even more active. They typically use them 22 times a week, spending 96 seconds each time.
