HighBeam Research: Twitter's media exposure exceeded Facebook by 50% in 2011

A report by HighBeam Research on December 27, 2011 showed that 50% of reports on social networks this year mentioned Twitter, and about 45% mentioned Facebook. The report never mentioned Google+.

In the comparison of the above indicators, Twitter has surpassed Facebook in all months of the year except February and April. Even in September this year, when Facebook held the 2011 f8 developer conference and announced major news such as the launch of timeline and open content features, Twitter's media exposure rate still exceeded Facebook that month.

This is impressive because Facebook is actually much stronger than Twitter in many ways: Facebook has eight times as many active users as Twitter, and 16 times as many shares as Twitter.

As of September 2011, Facebook had over 800 million monthly active users, while Twitter had only 100 million. As of July 2011, Facebook users posted 4 billion messages per day, while Twitter posted 250 million messages per day as of October 2011.

Twitter's high media exposure may be due to one reason, that is, people pay more attention to public information rather than private information. The principle is this: if a user has a Twitter account, all the information posted by the user can be shared with the public by default. Only when the user's Twitter account is encrypted can the privacy of the posted content be guaranteed. Although the features on Facebook are more complicated, the default attribute is that only friends can see the content posted by the user.
