It's 40 degrees! I just want to drink ice water. Will it be bad for my stomach? Huaxi experts say...

It’s too hot, too hot, too hot!

No one expected that after the beginning of autumn

Chengdu released two consecutive days

High temperature red warning

It doesn't work anymore.

Only a sip of ice water

That’s yyds!

But is drinking ice water bad for your stomach?

What's the best thirst-quenching drink on a hot day?

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University

Dr. Ma Qin

Let me show it to you all!

In fact, as early as the 1960s, the medical community was conducting research in this area. The main purpose of the research at that time was to use the principle that "gastrointestinal vasoconstriction will affect the secretion of digestive substances such as gastric juice and pepsin" to treat gastric ulcers. When trying gastric cryotherapy, there were successful cases of using a large amount of frozen balance fluid for gastric lavage to stop bleeding , but at the same time, a serious complication was also discovered, that is, the stomach can cause damage to our gastric mucosa under low temperature conditions. With the deepening of research and the advancement of medicine, it is currently believed that cold drinks have the following three effects on the stomach:

Cold stimulation reduces blood supply to the stomach , reduces gastric acid secretion, and affects digestion and absorption. (It has been successfully used to treat gastric ulcers)

Long-term continuous low stomach temperature affects the gastric mucosal cells and the corresponding protective mechanisms, causing damage to our gastric mucosa .

● The carbon dioxide produced by gas production aggravates the feeling of bloating , especially when it cannot be emptied immediately.

Don't panic after hearing this. Dr. Ma Qin said that although cold drinks do have a certain impact on the stomach, our human body still has a good regulatory mechanism. As long as you don't drink cold drinks continuously and in large quantities, most people still have a good resistance to this situation. Besides, it's too cruel to not let people drink ice water on a hot day!

So it is recommended that a healthy adult should not drink more than 500ml of cold drinks per day.

When it's too hot, a sip of ice water is so refreshing~ and it does make you feel a little cooler~

Dr. Ma Qin told us: Drinking cold drinks can directly lower our core body temperature on the one hand; on the other hand, the carbon dioxide in cold drinks is released in the stomach in the form of gas, and will take away the heat while burping. So it can relieve heat to a certain extent . But if you want to quench your thirst with ice water, the effect is not so obvious. The effect of quenching thirst has nothing to do with cold or heat, but with the sugar content. Let's put aside the effect of high sugar on the stomach. The speed at which sugary drinks pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell is relatively slow. In other words, drinks like carbonated drinks and tea drinks, because they contain a lot of sugar, will make people more thirsty the more they drink .

Moreover, carbonated drinks contain a high amount of sugar, which can easily lead to excessive energy intake without you noticing, causing calcium loss and damaging teeth...

Obese people are more likely to develop chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Having said so much, it is actually recommended that you drink warm water on hot days~

Drinking warm water can quench thirst quickly without causing gastrointestinal discomfort. In addition, drinking slightly warm water can cause blood vessels to dilate, promote sweating, and bring out the heat in the body, which can actually lower the body temperature and make us feel cooler.

Then someone asked, what temperature of water is considered warm water?

Dr. Ma Qin said that the definition of temperature is 27 degrees to 28 degrees, or when the air conditioner is set to 24 degrees, then room temperature water is good!

The sun has been so vicious lately that it’s best for everyone to stay at home if possible. If you really have to go out, be sure to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen !
