Four things to do to prevent gout

Four things to do to prevent gout

One morning, my father suddenly felt pain and swelling in the first toe on the right side. As the person with the most medical knowledge in the family, it was my job to carefully examine and solve this "case".

Son: When did the pain start? Was there swelling right away? Did you get hurt, like your toe got hit by a heavy object or got bumped? Have you had these symptoms before? Will they get better with rest?

Dad: There is no external injury. I had similar symptoms before and the pain was still there after resting.

Son: In addition to the pain in the toes, do you have pain in other places, such as the waist and kidney area?

DAD: No.

Son: Have you ever had similar symptoms before?

Dad: Never.

Thinking: Dad has a physical examination every year, and the physical examination report shows that his uric acid is high. The doctor has explained his daily diet and how to prevent gout. If symptoms occur, please seek medical attention immediately. Dad never drinks alcohol. Son: Have you eaten seafood, animal offal, etc. recently?

DAD: No.

Son: What about soy products?

Dad: I had tofu and bean sprouts for dinner yesterday.

Thinking: Based on the above information, gout was initially suspected. Due to the epidemic control, the community was sealed off, it was inconvenient to go to the hospital for treatment, and there was no symptomatic medicine at home, so physical therapy was first chosen - ice compress, drink plenty of water, rest, and reduce walking. After 5 hours of treatment, the pain and swelling were significantly reduced.

Check out relevant information to learn more about gout: Gout refers to a chronic metabolic disorder caused by abnormal purine metabolism. The diagnostic criteria for gout are currently mostly based on the gout diagnostic criteria established by the American Rheumatology Association in 1997, which include the following 9 items.

Anyone who meets three or more of the above criteria and excludes secondary gout can be diagnosed. For example, if the first metatarsal joint is found to be swollen and painful, the local skin color is dark red, and the blood uric acid test result is higher than normal, then according to this standard, it can be diagnosed as a gout patient.

Gout is a lifelong disease that cannot be completely cured at present, but can only be prevented. Therefore, we should educate our family members about prevention. We should do the following:

1. Control your weight and prevent obesity. To control your weight, you should control your diet and increase your exercise. Do not engage in strenuous activities and avoid fatigue, mental stress and emotional excitement.

2. Eat less high-purine foods such as animal offal, fish and soy products, drink more water (more than 2000mL of water per day), eat more leavened foods, alkaline porridge and root vegetables.

3. Avoid high blood lipids. High blood lipids can affect the excretion of uric acid and lead to gout. Pay attention to controlling your diet and eat low-fat, light and easily digestible food.

4. Control smoking and drinking. Do not drink excessively, especially avoid drinking beer.
