Can “cervical erosion” actually lead to infertility?

Gynecological diseases seriously threaten women's health, and cervical erosion is one of the common gynecological diseases in women. Cervical erosion actually refers to the outward migration of the columnar epithelium of the cervix, which is a normal phenomenon. It is the thin columnar epithelium of the cervix that replaces the thicker squamous epithelial cells that makes the cervix appear eroded. Mild cervical erosion generally does not affect conception, but moderate and severe cervical erosion may cause infertility because of the increase and viscosity of leucorrhea, especially severe cervical erosion, which may even lead to cancer.

Recently, 33-year-old Ms. Liu experienced such an experience. She had been preparing for pregnancy for two years but had not conceived a child. She went to the hospital for a check-up and found out that it was the "cervical erosion" that she had been ignoring. With her outstanding work ability, 33-year-old Ms. Liu became the regional head of a well-known financial company in Beijing. In the eyes of her colleagues, she is a typical "strong woman". Ms. Liu's husband also has a good job as a civil servant in a certain agency in Beijing. The couple's careers have been rising, and their quality of life has also improved. Wanting a child has become their most urgent wish. Unfortunately, Ms. Liu has been preparing for pregnancy for two years but has never been pregnant. Not long ago, Ms. Liu had symptoms of increased menstrual flow, dark color and clots, and lower abdominal pain. She thought that her irregular menstruation was caused by work, and she thought that she would slowly adjust after a while, so she didn't care too much. But recently, it was found that the symptoms did not improve, but worsened. The vaginal discharge became thick and smelly, and sometimes even bloody. After examination, Ms. Liu suffered from moderate cervical erosion and two cervical polyps.

"Cervical erosion? Cervical polyps? The result of the examination a year ago was cervicitis!" It turned out that Ms. Liu was diagnosed with cervicitis two years ago. At that time, she thought that this kind of inflammation was very normal for women, so she ignored the treatment. When she learned that the symptoms had worsened, Ms. Liu regretted it. I immediately comforted Ms. Liu and told her that this moderate cervical erosion was caused by cervicitis, and cervicitis would cause an increase in cervical secretions, hindering sperm from entering the uterine cavity, and ultimately affecting Ms. Liu's pregnancy.

Women who suffer from cervical erosion and eventually become infertile always feel helpless like Ms. Li. What are the specific reasons that cause cervical erosion and thus lead to female infertility? How does it affect female infertility?

1. Due to long-term stimulation of inflammation, the bacteria produced by cervical erosion will affect the survival of sperm, especially Escherichia coli will cause a strong agglutination effect on sperm, thereby causing sperm to lose vitality and cause infertility.

2. When suffering from cervical erosion, the cervical secretions contain a large number of white blood cells. White blood cells have phagocytic function. They will engulf sperm and reduce sperm motility, thus leading to infertility.

3. Generally speaking, sperm is not suitable for living in an inflammatory environment, because the inflammatory environment will affect the environment in which sperm exists. When cervical erosion is accompanied by inflammation, the activity of sperm will be reduced and infertility may occur.

4. When suffering from cervical erosion, the patient's cervical secretions are more than normal and are more sticky, making it difficult for sperm to pass through, thus affecting sperm motility and hindering sperm from entering the uterine cavity, thereby reducing the chance of conception.

If the infertility caused by cervical erosion significantly affects the morphology of the uterine cavity, surgical treatment is recommended. Considering the patient's desire for pregnancy after surgery and natural childbirth, ultra-high frequency LEEP knife is used for minimally invasive treatment. During the follow-up examination three months after treatment, Ms. Liu found that her cervix was smooth and elastic after healing, and it was the same as normal cervical tissue when palpated. I suggested that she could start preparing for pregnancy. Ms. Liu recuperated for a period of time and is now successfully pregnant.

With the quickening pace of life, women are facing gynecological diseases unexpectedly, and the number of infertile people is increasing. Among them, the number of patients with infertility caused by cervical erosion is also increasing. Therefore, I suggest: when suffering from cervical erosion, you must seek treatment in time, because cervical erosion can not only lead to infertility, but may even cause cancer. For your own health and life safety, you must do early prevention, early detection, and early treatment to ensure you have a strong body.
