"Where there is light, there is hope." Recently, with the help of the "Green Light Man" public welfare fund, Mr. Xiong from Xianning, Hubei and Mr. Luo from Wuhan successfully underwent surgery at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University. Mr. Xiong, 34 years old this year, lives in Gaotieling Town, Jiayu County, Xianning City. According to his mother, Mr. Xiong has had poor eyesight since childhood. After birth, he was diagnosed with congenital cataracts in both eyes and a history of cerebral palsy. Later, he suffered from amblyopia. The family, which relies only on his parents' farming and subsistence allowances, lives a very hard life. "The child has no ability to take care of himself, so we can only take care of him while farming. We have survived all the bumps and bruises over the years," said Mr. Xiong's mother. Three years ago, Mr. Xiong developed symptoms of swelling and redness in his right eye. He took some eye pressure-lowering drugs and left it alone. However, he recently found that his vision had deteriorated drastically, and his eyes were all foggy. The swelling and headache became more and more obvious. With the help of his family, he went to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment. After a detailed examination by Dr. Sun Zhong, a glaucoma specialist, Mr. Xiong was diagnosed with secondary glaucoma in both eyes. His left eye only had light perception, and his right eye only had manual vision. He had to undergo glaucoma drainage valve implantation surgery immediately to retain the little vision he had. Coincidentally, Mr. Luo, 47, who lives in Jianghan District of Wuhan City, is not only a severe patient of COPD, but also suffers from severe myopia. After losing his ability to work, he has been relying on subsistence allowances and relief from relatives. "I am the only one in my family. Although my eyesight is not good, I can still walk with support. But recently I often stumble at home, and my field of vision is getting narrower and narrower. Now I dare not go out at all." Mr. Luo then came to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for a check-up. Director Sun Chong discovered that Mr. Luo suffered from "bilateral open-angle glaucoma and bilateral cataracts", his left eye was blind, and the corrected visual acuity of his right eye was only 0.1. In order to prevent his right eye vision from continuing to deteriorate, Mr. Luo urgently needed to undergo anti-glaucoma surgery on his right eye. The high cost of glaucoma surgery made the two already impoverished families even worse off. Mr. Xiong and Mr. Luo couldn't help but back out. After Director Sun Zhong learned about their situation, he immediately contacted the staff of the "Glaucomania" special relief fund and successfully applied for special fund assistance for the two patients to help them overcome this difficult time. Fortunately, last week, through surgical treatment, Mr. Xiong and Mr. Luo's condition was well controlled, their vision did not deteriorate further, and their headaches and eye swelling were relieved. Wu Zuohong, director of the glaucoma department at Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital, reminded that glaucoma is the leading irreversible blinding eye disease and can lead to vision loss or even blindness. Even after surgery, glaucoma patients should go to the hospital for regular checkups. |
