Ophthalmologists talk about eye diseases: Does myopia surgery cure myopia?

Is there any "secret recipe" to say goodbye to myopia? Does myopia surgery mean myopia is cured? Will myopia be inherited after myopia surgery? Is myopia surgery worth doing? Han Dongmei, deputy chief physician of Wuhan University Affiliated Aier Eye Hospital, is invited to answer your questions.

Can myopia be cured by undergoing myopia surgery?

Actually, to be precise, myopia surgery is not equivalent to curing myopia. Because true myopia is currently incurable. Generally speaking, the axial length of true myopia patients is longer than that of non-myopic people. The higher the degree, the more obvious the axial length becomes. Wearing glasses or having surgery cannot shorten the axial length.

So far, myopia surgery is the best way to help myopic people say goodbye to myopia and glasses. There is no other "secret recipe" to cure myopia. Many movie stars, NBA players, ophthalmologists, etc. also choose myopia surgery to say goodbye to myopia.

After undergoing myopia surgery, is it possible that myopia can still be inherited?

Regardless of whether or not you have surgery, myopia has a certain probability of being inherited, especially for high myopia, and the probability of the next generation becoming myopic is higher. Of course, it does not mean that all myopic children are 100% myopic, but the probability of myopia is higher than that of non-myopic children.

So, is myopia surgery no longer attractive?

Myopia surgery can neither cure myopia nor prevent the inheritance of myopia, so is it worth doing?

Whether it is worth it or not actually depends on two points: 1. Can it help you see clearly and have clear naked eye vision; 2. Can it help you get rid of frame glasses and contact lenses. The answer is undoubtedly yes. Isn’t clear naked eye vision good? Isn’t the purpose of myopia surgery to correct vision and get rid of glasses?

Especially for myopic people who rely on masks to "keep their lives", wearing contact lenses may increase the risk of infection, and wearing framed glasses may fog up every time you breathe, which is simply painful. Many of my friends have joined the army of myopia surgery, and they are free without glasses. It is indeed much more convenient to have masks without frames.

Of course, whether myopia surgery is worthwhile or not is very subjective. Whether you wear glasses or have surgery, we are here to support you.
