Why can't we feed polar bears?

Polar bears, as the top of the Arctic ecological food chain, naturally have their own survival rules. If their survival is interfered with too much, it will affect the natural order of the Arctic. Moreover, the law that has always existed in nature is the survival of the fittest. Most polar bears can still catch enough food to survive their difficult period. Only a small number of weak polar bears will find it difficult to survive due to changes in the environment. If humans continue to feed them food, they will lose their predatory nature.

Polar bear life span

Polar bears live 25-30 years. The gestation period is 195-265 days. Each litter usually contains two cubs, but occasionally one, three or four. The mortality rate of cubs is about 10-30%. Newborn polar bears are about 30 cm long and weigh 700 grams. They are born without assistance and their eyes are closed, but their bodies are covered with soft hair. They can walk at 1-2 months old. After 3-4 months, the mother bear will take the cubs out of the cave to see the world and gain experience. At night, she will lead them back to the cave to spend the night. They are weaned 4-5 months after birth and become independent after 2-3 years old. During this period, the cubs must learn how to hunt and survive in the harsh environment of the Arctic.

Polar bears are such good swimmers that they were once thought to be marine animals. Polar bears spend most of their lives (about 66.6%) in a "stationary" state, such as sleeping, lying down to rest, or waiting for prey. The remaining 29.1% of the time is spent walking or swimming on land or ice, 1.2% of the time is spent attacking prey, and the rest of the time is basically spent enjoying delicious food. Sometimes the prey that polar bears have worked hard to catch will attract the attention of their own kind. Generally speaking, if they are unfortunate enough to face those huge guys, smaller polar bears will be more inclined to slip away. However, a mother who is nursing her young will sometimes fight with the offending big male bear in order to protect her young or defend the hard-earned food for the family. At the same time, polar bears are the only bears that actively attack humans, and most attacks occur at night.

Why are polar bears endangered?

Polar bears are on the verge of extinction because the global temperature is rising and the floating ice in the Arctic is gradually melting. The former home of polar bears has been destroyed to a certain extent. Polar bears are animals that can survive in harsh environments. Their range of activities is mainly in the sea areas with floating ice near the Arctic Ocean. Polar bears are genuine carnivores in the bear family, and 98.5% of their food is meat. They mainly prey on seals, especially ringed seals, as well as bearded seals, saddle seals, and hooded seals.
