The harm of sudden conflicts between doctors and patients, doctors and doctors, and doctors and nurses during the peri-anesthesia period

There are many cases of conflicts between doctors and patients, doctors and nurses during the peri-anesthesia period reported by domestic media, and most of them are extreme cases. For example, a drunk trauma patient beat an anesthesiologist in the operating room and smashed the laminar flow equipment in the operating room; a pregnant woman died tragically on the cold operating table, and all the doctors disappeared. The irresponsible media reports have further intensified the conflicts between doctors and patients, leading to more and more extreme conflicts during the peri-anesthesia period.

First, let’s discuss the impact on medical treatment:

The tense doctor-patient relationship has led to frequent vicious violent incidents such as "medical disturbances", which have damaged medical equipment, disrupted normal diagnosis and treatment order, endangered the personal safety of medical staff, and caused losses to hospitals in many aspects such as economy, social reputation, and talent.

If the legal rights and interests of medical staff are not protected, their personal safety is threatened, and their personal dignity is insulted in medical positions that are already heavy and stressful, their work enthusiasm will be severely dampened, and even talent loss may occur. In the long run, this will affect the normal operation of the hospital and the development of clinical medicine in my country.

Next, we explore the impact on patients:

When the doctor-patient relationship is tense and there is a crisis of trust between doctors and patients, medical staff will adopt defensive medical behaviors, that is, medical staff will implement special medical behaviors to avoid medical risks and medical lawsuits, such as casting a wide net for examinations, expanding the scope of surgery, exaggerating surgical risks when fulfilling the obligation to sign and inform the doctor of the surgery, making medical referrals with a shirking nature, avoiding admitting high-risk patients, avoiding using trial drugs on patients, etc. Defensive medical behaviors may reduce the misdiagnosis rate to some extent, but they also cause an increase in medical expenses. More defensive medical behaviors will seriously damage the health interests of patients and make the already tense doctor-patient relationship even worse.

Next, we explore the social impact:

Long-term tension and even confrontation between doctors and patients will increase social instability and affect social stability. The frequent occurrence of vicious violent incidents has forced some hospitals to equip security guards and even set up police stations, resulting in increased personnel expenses. At the same time, the tense doctor-patient relationship has made it difficult for medical schools to recruit students. The fourth survey report on the practice status of doctors by the Chinese Medical Association showed that nearly half of the medical staff were dissatisfied with the current practice environment. Only 6.83% of doctors wanted their children to become doctors, while 78.01% did not. The difficulty in recruiting students for medical schools will have an adverse impact on the long-term development of clinical medicine in my country, and thus affect the progress and development of the entire society.

In short, this is a game with no winners. Therefore, all parties should take avoiding such conflicts as an important task.
