There is growing evidence that metabolically healthy obese people are actually not healthy and are at increased risk of a variety of diseases and death. A retrospective cohort study based on nearly 4.5 million adults in the UK suggests that even if overweight and obese people are metabolically healthy (no hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, or cardiovascular disease), their risk of developing chronic kidney disease is still significantly higher than that of people with normal weight and metabolism. The analysis showed that during an average follow-up of 5.4 years, metabolically healthy overweight and obese people had a 30% and 66% increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease, respectively, compared with metabolically healthy, normal-weight people. |
