How deep should garlic be planted to achieve reasonable garlic hopping?

In September, most areas in the north began to get busy with garlic planting, because timely sowing is also one of the important measures to obtain garlic stalks and garlic heads. However, there are some symptoms that affect the yield during garlic planting, one of which is "jumping garlic". Perhaps many people do not understand garlic "jumping garlic", but it is not unfamiliar to growers. So what does the commonly mentioned garlic "jumping garlic" mean?

How deep should garlic be planted?

The saying "plant onions deep and garlic shallow" is familiar to ordinary people! However, it is still necessary to briefly explain how to do it.

Garlic is usually planted in 9 rows per furrow or 20 rows per large furrow. Whether it is a large or small furrow, garlic farmers need to level the land in the furrow to plant garlic better. Garlic planting is divided into machine trenching and manual trenching. The depth of the trenching machine is generally about 4-5 cm, so the depth of garlic planting is more appropriate at this size.

When planting garlic, be sure to plant the garlic tip facing upward. The best option is to plant all the garlic tips facing south. All things grow with the sun, and garlic also has a tendency to grow towards the sun. After planting garlic, cover the garlic with your hands, or cover the garlic with your feet or a scraper after all the garlic in this area is planted.

What does jumping garlic mean?

The so-called "garlic jumping" refers to the fact that when garlic takes root after sowing, the seed garlic cloves are sometimes pushed off the ground or exposed to the ground. This phenomenon is called garlic "jumping".

Garlic "jumping" phenomenon can easily cause the garlic cloves to gradually wither due to drought, resulting in missing seedlings and broken ridges. Even if wilting does not occur, the garlic cloves will turn red early in the later stage, thus affecting the normal development and growth of the garlic, and eventually causing the garlic to crack and spread out, affecting the quality and yield of garlic.

Why does garlic jump appear?

In fact, the most common situation I encountered when planting garlic is that the garlic seeds were planted upside down. That is, the garlic tips were planted underground. In this way, when the garlic sprouts, the roots will be on top and the heads will be on the bottom. When the garlic seedlings grow to a certain extent, the garlic cloves will be exposed outside. At this time, you must replant the garlic, but this will also affect the growth of the garlic.

The second situation is the problem of garlic seeds themselves. Garlic is asexually propagated and will mutate during repeated planting for many years. For example, some garlic cloves look good, but there are two or three garlic buds in the middle. If the garlic is sown and germinated, several garlic seedlings will grow out, which will push the mother garlic out of the ground. This is also a case of jumping garlic.

Generally speaking, garlic jumping happens every year, but it is not a high-probability event. Nowadays, garlic planting generally requires mulching. When the garlic seedlings are broken, this situation can be discovered in time, and then the garlic can be replanted.
