What does semi-clutch mean? When does a car use semi-clutch?

Half-clutch is a working state of the clutch. Mastering the half-clutch state is the most basic skill for driving a manual transmission vehicle. For experienced drivers, the operation method and timing are already well known. When you are learning to drive in a driving school, the instructor will spend a lot of time to let you learn and master half-clutch, so let's review the half-clutch of the car here.

What does semi-clutch mean?

Semi-clutch when driving is commonly known as semi-clutch. Semi-clutch means that the clutch gear is in a clutch and engaged state. At this time, the power is the weakest. If the clutch is not well controlled, the vehicle will easily stall.

The clutch semi-clutch working state, firstly, plays a buffering role in the process of combining and transmitting power between the clutch active disc (engine end) and the driven disc (gearbox end), and secondly, controls the strength of the vehicle's driving power output in the low-speed forward gear (mostly first gear, a few are second gear) and reverse gear, which is one of the ways of clutch speed control.

When does a car use semi-clutch?

1 Getting Started

When starting the vehicle, you should use semi-clutch starting. When you put the gear on, turn on the left turn signal, check the rearview mirror for oncoming vehicles, then slowly lift the clutch to start. When you see the vehicle starting to move forward, hold the clutch steady, let it move forward for a distance, then slowly release the clutch. At this time, you can also step on the gas.

Note: When the vehicle starts to move forward, be sure to hold the clutch steady, otherwise the vehicle will stall if you lift the clutch again.

2 Gear Shift

You must use the clutch when shifting gears. When you drive at a certain speed, you need to shift gears. You can step on the clutch, shift the gear into the desired gear, then lift the clutch to half-clutch, stabilize the clutch, and then slowly release the clutch. When releasing the clutch, you can also slowly add gas.

Note: When releasing the clutch, do not release it all at once. If you do, the vehicle will experience a severe jerk.

3. Uphill

When the vehicle starts uphill, you should pay more attention to the coordination of the clutch. When you start halfway up a slope, step on the brake and slowly lift the clutch. When you lift the clutch until the body shakes obviously and there is a noticeable forward tilt, hold the clutch steady, release the brake, and accelerate uphill.

Note: Starting on a slope requires a very high level of clutch semi-clutching, and you must find the semi-clutching contact point. Otherwise, it is easy to stall or slip backwards.

4. Traffic jam

When driving in the city, the most common thing is traffic jam. When there is a traffic jam, semi-clutch is used very frequently. Basically, semi-clutch is used to control the vehicle's movement. The right foot should be placed on the brake. Be sure to maintain a sufficient distance from the vehicle and pay attention to braking at all times.

Note: If you park for a long time, you can pull up the handbrake, shift into neutral, and let the clutch be in a resting state.

How to operate the semi-clutch

On the one hand, you should use the half-clutch when it is necessary. On the other hand, you should master the method of using it. Specifically, you should press the clutch firmly, then slowly lift it to the half-clutch position and pause for a while. If you need to speed up the car, you should lift the clutch a little more. If you need to slow down the car, you should press the clutch a little. Use the lifting and pressing of the clutch to control the speed of the car.

When controlling the vehicle speed at a low speed and effectively controlling the vehicle power output state, the clutch semi-clutch speed control state (continuous power output) and the clutch speed control state (intermittent power output, relying on inertia to glide) are operated alternately.
