Will myopia be inherited by the next generation? What should pregnant mothers pay attention to during pregnancy?

Myopia is a very common phenomenon nowadays. Many students wear thick lenses at a young age. Even their mothers can’t recognize them when they take off their glasses. Many people say that myopia is hereditary. Is this statement reliable?

Will myopia be inherited by the next generation?

There is a high possibility that it will be inherited, especially pathological inheritance, that is, congenital myopia.

The genetic mechanism of myopia is very complex, and there is currently no clear theory about the inheritance pattern of myopia.

For parents with low to moderate myopia, genetic factors will not play a dominant role. However, for parents with high myopia (myopia > 625 degrees), especially pathological myopia, genetic factors play a more obvious role.

When both parents are myopic, the probability of myopia in their children is greater than 90%. If combined with a myopia gene carrier, half of the children may be highly myopic, while combined with normal vision or moderate and low myopia, the child may have a 1% chance of myopia.

Generally speaking, if both parents have myopia, the possibility of having a child with myopia is greater than that of others. Of course, this can also be adjusted later to avoid myopia. If it is passed on to the baby, the earliest can be found at 1 to 3 years old, and some people will gradually appear at the age of 5 or 6.

What should myopic pregnant mothers pay attention to during pregnancy

1. Eat more fish and green vegetables, especially during pregnancy; eat more foods that help eyesight, which can transmit nutrients to the baby through the mother, indirectly improving the baby's eyesight.

2. Buy some omega-3, which is a type of DHA; it is generally sold in pharmacies.

3. Extra vitamin C and vitamin A supplements can help the eyes resist oxidation and enhance the child's physical fitness. For example, carrots, oranges, and kiwis all have high content of vitamin C and vitamin A.

How to prevent children from myopia

Strictly control children’s use of electronic products

Keep the correct distance and brightness when watching TV and mobile phones. Use no more than 1 hour a day, no more than 30 minutes each time, and try not to use it before the age of 6.

Strictly control sugar intake on a daily basis

During the process of digestion, absorption and metabolism, sweets can produce a large amount of acidic substances, which can neutralize calcium in the body and lead to a decrease in blood calcium. Calcium deficiency reduces the elasticity of the eyeball wall and lengthens the eye axis. Excessive desserts can also change the osmotic pressure of the aqueous humor, causing the lens to bulge, blurring the image and causing myopia.

The sugar in sweets can also consume a large amount of vitamin B1 in the human body's metabolism. Vitamin B1 has the effect of treating the optic nerve, and the content of vitamin B1 will affect the state of the optic nerve.

Appropriate outdoor exercise

For example, table tennis, badminton, cycling, swimming, etc. Some studies have shown that reasonable outdoor exercise is very effective in preventing myopia.

Diet for beneficial nutrients

Vitamin A: cod liver oil, animal liver

Vitamin C, E: tomatoes, citrus, oranges

Vitamin B group: green vegetables, milk, lean meat, egg yolk

Lutein and zeaxanthin: broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, pumpkin

Proper lutein supplementation

If your child is born with poor eyesight, you can also choose some additional vitamin supplements, such as lutein supplements, according to the situation.
