Why do babies feel nausea and vomiting after eating complementary foods? What should I do if my child feels nausea after eating complementary foods?

When babies are about five or six months old, they can start eating complementary foods. Some children may start eating complementary foods a little earlier, and they may even experience some nausea and vomiting when eating complementary foods. What is the reason for this?

Why do babies vomit after eating complementary foods?

The diet of a 4-month-old baby should mainly consist of breast milk and formula milk. However, solid foods, such as iron-containing rice cereal, can be slowly added to babies between 4 and 6 months old. Some children even have the desire to eat complementary foods at three months old, but the tongue push reflex of most children has not disappeared. Because of this reflex, most children will spit out what is put into their mouths. Children's dry retching is also related to this reason, and parents do not need to be particularly nervous.

If the child has retching followed by vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux needs to be ruled out. Children with gastroesophageal reflux can be fed with a thicker formula. Children can be asked to sit up as much as possible during meals, eat with a spoon, rest between meals, and stop when they are full.

What to do if your child feels nauseous after eating complementary food

First of all, we should follow the principles of baby food supplementation, such as a gradual process from few varieties to many, from thin to thick, and from small amounts to large amounts. In addition, it is best to start adding complementary foods after the baby is 6 months old, because the younger the age, the more likely it is to have dry heaves. Infants and young children themselves have the possibility of physiological reflux, so they are prone to reflux and dry heaves when swallowing. Some of the dry heaves are due to food allergies or intolerances, especially for babies who are allergic to milk and eggs.

Try to start with small amounts of thin, mushy complementary foods, and take into account the baby's previous nursing history of nausea and vomiting. As the baby grows older, he or she will gradually tolerate the food, so don't worry.

If a child over 18 months old still experiences obvious nausea and vomiting when eating complementary foods, pathological reflux disease may be considered, such as hiatal hernia and other pathological diseases.

Cultivate a good habit for your baby to chew slowly and thoroughly. Do not swallow food whole. Do not watch TV or play with toys while eating, otherwise vomiting and indigestion problems are very likely to occur.

The order of adding complementary food to babies

In fact, there is no need to pay special attention to the order in which complementary foods are added.

Baby 6 months, rice cereal, vegetable puree, fruit puree

Baby 7 months, porridge, soft noodles, vegetable powder, egg yolk, fish paste, tofu

Babies 8-9 months: meat paste, animal liver, steamed bread slices, biscuits, eggs

For babies aged 10-12 months, eat thick porridge, soft rice, minced meat, wontons, and shredded vegetables.

At the beginning, you can only give your baby one kind of complementary food suitable for his age. Try it for 3 to 4 days or a week. If the baby's digestion is good and the bowel movements are normal, let the baby try another one. Never add several in a short period of time.
