Can wood sawdust be used as crop fertilizer? How to process wood chips into organic fertilizer?

Sawdust, also known as wood chips, is generally produced during renovation, chopping wood, carpentry, etc. These sawdust can be used as a combustion aid, and some can also be made into farmyard manure, which is also good for fertilizing the fields.

Can wood sawdust be used as fertilizer for crops?

Wood sawdust can be used as farmyard manure. However, some wood species are not easy to rot, such as pine and cypress species with high oil content, which are not suitable for farmyard manure.

Sawdust is the remaining material of wood, mostly composed of cellulose, protein and polysaccharides, and rich in organic matter. However, due to its lignified characteristics, it decays slower than other materials such as straw, leaves and animal remains. Therefore, some composting agents can be added and mixed evenly to accelerate its decay.

How to process sawdust into organic fertilizer

The finer the sawdust, the easier it is to rot. You can pile it into a trapezoidal pile, mix it with a composting agent and water it, so that it is not wet when squeezed by hand and is damp when touched. Cover it with plastic film or tarpaulin, and it will be fermented in about 30 days.

The nutritional content of sawdust is lower than other organic fertilizers, but its loose characteristics can significantly improve the permeability of the soil. If you are planting potted plants, you can directly spread fresh sawdust on the soil surface about 2 cm, let it ferment naturally, and then mix it with the potting soil.

Is furniture sawdust toxic?

Toxic.

The sawdust produced by furniture processing factories contains a large amount of formaldehyde, benzene, and epoxy resin because the materials used to make furniture have been treated with anti-corrosion. These harmful substances cannot be removed no matter how you ferment them. These sawdust must not be used. They are of no help to plant growth and seriously harm the plants.
