Is it okay for girls to drink water before going to bed?

Many people like to drink a glass of water before going to bed. Some people say that drinking water before going to bed will increase the burden on the kidneys and increase the frequency of urination; but if you don’t drink water before going to bed, it will increase blood viscosity and easily cause cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Regarding this matter, kidney function experts and cardiovascular disease experts emphasized that there is no need to worry too much about drinking water before going to bed. For most people, there is no harm in drinking water before going to bed. The key is to drink water in moderation.

Speaking of the troubles caused by drinking water before going to bed, Wang Mei, chief physician of the Department of Nephrology at Peking University People's Hospital, said that for patients with severe renal failure and those who have already undergone dialysis, due to the poor kidney's ability to regulate water, drinking too much water will increase the body's water load, which may cause edema and even heart failure. Zhang Weijun, chief physician of the Department of Cardiology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, said that people with poor heart function who drink too much water before going to bed are at risk of heart failure, and drinking a lot of water before going to bed and increasing the frequency of urination will affect sleep quality.

However, both experts said that this is only limited to those people with poor heart and kidney function, and can only occur when drinking plenty of water. Wang Mei said that drinking more water before going to bed will increase the burden on the kidneys, especially in the hot summer when the body loses water quickly, so it is important to maintain good hydration. For those with urinary and reproductive system infections, drinking more water and urinating can also help to erode the bacteria in the urethra.

In addition, Zhang Weijun emphasized that sweating while sleeping causes the water content in the blood to decrease, and for people with cardiovascular diseases, the viscosity of the blood increases. Drinking a glass of water before going to bed can dilute blood viscosity and reduce the risk of sudden events such as myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and cerebral thrombosis. For diabetic patients, maintaining a certain amount of water is also beneficial for controlling blood sugar.

There is no harm in drinking water before going to bed, the key is to drink it in moderation. If you are worried that urination will affect your sleep quality, drink a small amount of water several times during the day, 100 ml each time, to maintain body water. Drink water in moderation at night, and drink a glass of water before going to bed to relieve dry mouth. People with cardiovascular disease can keep a glass of water on their bedside and drink it when they wake up at night or when they wake up to reduce blood viscosity.
