The dangers of wearing an IUD for a long time

There are many ways of contraception clinically. Many families use condoms for contraception. Some women may consider wearing contraceptive rings for convenience. The contraceptive probability of contraception with contraceptive rings is still relatively high, but many women worry that long-term wearing of contraceptive rings will have adverse effects on the body. This situation is related to the physical constitution of each woman. So what are the dangers of wearing an IUD for a long time?

1. Soreness: People have always talked about the adverse reactions of contraceptive rings, but it has to be said that more than 40% of people in China currently use contraceptive rings for contraception. There are no side effects to wearing an IUD for a short period of time, but if you wear it for a long time without going to the hospital for a check-up, it may cause uterine perforation and may even pass through the bladder and intestinal wall which are close to the uterus. Some women will experience soreness or discomfort in the lower abdomen or lower back after the placement of the ring. This is because the contraceptive ring placed in the uterus is a "foreign body" to the uterus, especially when it is too large or positioned low. The uterus contracts to expel this "foreign body", causing uterine contraction pain.

2. Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding in the short term after the placement of the ring is due to the abrasion of the endometrium by the placement of the contraceptive ring, but it will repair quickly. The bleeding usually lasts for several days, and the amount of blood does not exceed the menstrual volume, so no treatment is required. However, for some women, about 15% to 20%, after the placement of the contraceptive ring, due to histochemical changes in the endometrium, there will be local coagulation disorders, manifested as excessive menstrual flow, prolonged menstruation, irregular menstrual bleeding, and some even have spotty menstruation, increased leucorrhea mixed with blood, etc., which can cause a large loss of iron in the body, which can not only cause anemia, but also affect the function of myoglobin, cytochrome and iron-containing enzymes, causing patients to experience drowsiness, fatigue, listlessness and other symptoms.

3. Abnormal pregnancy: The IUD can only prevent normal pregnancy in the uterine cavity, but cannot prevent abnormal pregnancy outside the uterus (i.e. ectopic pregnancy). Therefore, it is inevitable that a small number of women who use IUDs for contraception will have ectopic pregnancy. These symptoms usually vary from person to person and generally do not cause much harm. There may be some side effects because the uterus has an adaptation process after the ring is inserted.
