Glucose testing during pregnancy

Glucose testing during pregnancy

Some pregnant women may have high blood sugar levels when they do prenatal checkups, because women's tastes change during pregnancy, and they may like to eat sweets, which can easily cause blood sugar levels to rise in the body. Excessive blood sugar levels will not only bring stress to pregnant women, but will also affect the growth of the fetus. So what are the precautions for doing glucose tests during pregnancy?

Steps to check blood sugar during pregnancy

1. First of all, don’t eat after 10 o’clock the night before, and don’t have breakfast in the morning. Because blood sugar screening requires fasting. Then, after completing the registration and payment, you can go to the blood drawing window to have your blood drawn.

2. After the blood is drawn, go get a 75-gram bag of glucose and divide it evenly into three cups (disposable cups). Pour about three-quarters of the solution into each cup with warm water and drink it after it dissolves. Note: Be sure to dissolve it before drinking. You can also bring a stirring stick in advance and stir it before drinking, because it is really too sweet. Then it was a matter of waiting, about an hour before having a tube of blood drawn.

What to pay attention to when checking blood sugar during pregnancy

1. Do not stop taking the medicine without authorization just because of a fasting blood sugar test. The test results obtained in this way can neither accurately reflect the condition nor cause blood sugar fluctuations and aggravate the condition.

2. Do not diet too much the day before the examination in order to get the ideal results. The blood sugar results measured at this time may be slightly lower, but they cannot represent the actual situation of normal blood sugar control. To ensure the authenticity and reliability of the test results, meals and medications should be the same as usual the day before the test, and ensure a good night's sleep. In addition, you should avoid strenuous exercise, smoking and drinking stimulating beverages (such as coffee) before blood testing.

3. Do not go to the hospital to have fasting blood drawn after injecting insulin at home. Since the time for blood drawing in the hospital is unpredictable, if the blood cannot be drawn within half an hour, the meal time will inevitably be delayed, which may cause hypoglycemia.

4. If you are unable to determine the specific time to have your fasting blood drawn in the hospital, you may as well undergo normal treatment and eat at home in the morning, and then go to the hospital to measure your blood sugar 2 hours after the meal. This will not affect normal meals and medication, and will not cause fluctuations in blood sugar.

5. For patients with low insulin secretion levels and high blood sugar in the morning, it is best to use a blood glucose meter to complete the fasting blood sugar test at home in advance, and write down the results before going to the hospital. Try not to go to the hospital to test your fasting blood sugar, because the blood collection time in the hospital outpatient clinic is too late, which will delay the patient's morning insulin treatment and have an adverse effect on blood sugar throughout the day.

During pregnancy, you should be able to check your blood sugar. No matter whether the result is high or low, you need to pay enough attention to it. Too high or too low blood sugar is not good for the person concerned. Pregnant women also need to pay enough attention to the problem of high blood sugar during pregnancy, and control it well in diet and other aspects of life to prevent it from continuing to rise.
