Risks of IVF

Risks of IVF

The emergence of test-tube babies has given many infertile families a chance to reconcile. Although children are not the only bond that holds a family together, families with children are relatively easier to connect with each other. Although the development of IVF technology has formed a certain theoretical system today, there are different risks in each stage of the IVF operation. The dangers of each stage of IVF are introduced below.

What are the risks of egg retrieval?

Mild to moderate pelvic and abdominal pain (during or after egg retrieval). In most cases, the pain subsides within a day or two and can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.

Damage to organs near the ovaries, such as the bladder, intestines, or blood vessels. In very rare cases, intestinal or blood vessel damage may require emergency surgery and occasionally a blood transfusion.

Pelvic infection (mild to severe). Pelvic infections after egg retrieval or embryo transfer are uncommon now because antibiotics are usually given during egg retrieval.

Severe infections may require hospitalization and/or treatment with intravenous antibiotics.

In rare cases, surgery to remove one or both of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and/or uterus may be necessary to control a severe infection. Women who have a pelvic infection or endometriosis that affects the ovaries are more likely to have an IVF-related infection.

What are the risks of embryo transfer?

Premature birth: Babies born prematurely (whether conceived naturally or through in vitro fertilization) are at higher risk of health complications such as lung development problems, intestinal infections, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, language disorders, behavioral problems, etc.; maternal bleeding; cesarean section; gestational hypertension; gestational diabetes.
