Overview of delayed periods

Delayed menstruation, also known as "infrequent menstruation", "delayed menstruation", "menstrual due date", etc., is a common type of menstrual disorder. Women's menstrual cycle is generally 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. About 7 days early or late is still within the normal range, and the length of the cycle varies from person to person. However, if menstruation does not come after more than 7 days, it is considered delayed menstruation. Various factors that affect the female nerve center - the hypothalamus-pituitary-pituitary-uterine-ovarian axis and its uterus may cause delayed menstruation. It can occur during an ovulatory cycle or an anovulatory cycle. If a pregnant woman finds that her menstrual period is delayed for more than 10 days, she should first rule out pregnancy.

Causes of delayed menstruation

1. Pregnancy

After the menstruation is delayed for 10 days, you can go to the hospital for an early pregnancy test. If the result is positive, you are very likely to be pregnant. Other symptoms of pregnancy may also occur, such as chills, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, etc.

2. Medicines

Taking estrogen-containing drugs, such as copper corpus luteum and birth control pills, can increase the follicular phase and may lead to delayed menstruation. Newer generation gastrokinetic drugs may also cause delayed menstruation.

3. Caused by surgical treatment

For example, intrauterine surgery may cause intrauterine or cervical adhesions, which may prevent menstruation from being discharged, thereby delaying menstruation.

4. Endocrine imbalance

Obesity, excessive dieting, irregular lifestyle, ovarian aging, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc. can all cause endocrine imbalance in women and lead to delayed menstruation.

5. Chronic diseases

Chronic hepatitis, tuberculosis, tumors, hypothyroidism, severe anemia, lack of vitamin E, etc., often cause delayed menstruation.

6. Spiritual elements

Psychological disorders such as anxiety, excessive stress, changes in the natural environment, etc. can all cause delayed menstruation.

Clinical symptoms of delayed menstruation

1. Delayed menstruation

The menstrual cycle is delayed by more than 8 to 9 days, or even every 40 to 50 days. If the delay does not exceed 7 days and there are no other symptoms, it should not be treated as this disease.

2. With the clinical symptoms of the disease

(1) Pregnancy: If pregnancy causes delayed menstruation, it may be accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, constant sleepiness, nausea, and vomiting;

(2) Symptoms and clinical manifestations often associated with various underlying diseases. Polycystic ovarian syndrome may present with obesity, excessive hair growth, acne, and infertility. Hypothyroidism is often accompanied by apathy, memory loss, dullness, non-pitting edema, anorexia, abdominal distension, constipation, etc.

Delayed period check

It is normal for menstruation to be delayed by about a week. If a couple has sexual intercourse, uses condoms for contraception, and the condoms do not crack or leak fluid, the possibility of pregnancy is not high. The detection rate of early pregnancy test strips is also low. It is recommended to observe carefully. If the menstruation is delayed for about 10 days, you can go to the hospital for a blood HCG test to confirm whether you are pregnant.

During pregnancy, the necessary laboratory and auxiliary examination methods should be selected according to the actual condition: blood pressure ovarian examination. Blood tests of pituitary function. Full-term B-ultrasound examination can be used to check whether the uterus and ovaries have polycystic ovary changes. Cartilage MRI for pituitary microadenomas. Supplementary sella turcica CT examination to determine whether there is a pituitary cystadenoma.
