What causes breast swelling and lumps during menstruation?

It may be caused by breast hyperplasia, so it is best to go to the hospital for a check-up.

Symptoms of breast hyperplasia

Breast pain

The pain is mainly in the breast lump, and may also radiate to the affected armpit, chest, flank, shoulder and back. Breast pain often occurs or worsens a few days before menstruation, and the pain is significantly reduced or disappears after menstruation; it may also fluctuate with mood changes.

Breast lumps

The lump may appear in one or both breasts. Usually in the upper outer quadrant of the breast. The more common ones are flaky. The borders of the lumps are not very clear and the sizes vary. The texture is medium or slightly hard and easy to move. There is no adhesion to the surrounding tissue and it is often painful to touch. As the menstrual cycle changes, the lump becomes larger and harder before menstruation, and becomes smaller and softer after menstruation.

Nipple discharge

A small number of patients may experience nipple discharge, which is spontaneous, straw-yellow or brown serous discharge.

Menstrual disorders

Patients with this disease may also experience irregular menstruation, scanty or light-colored menstruation, and may be accompanied by dysmenorrhea.

Emotional changes

Patients often feel depressed or irritable, which worsens when they are angry, stressed or tired.

There are many types of breast hyperplasia. Some are completely physiological and will resolve on their own without special treatment, such as simple breast hyperplasia. Some are pathological and require active treatment, especially the cystic hyperplasia type, which should not be taken lightly due to the possibility of cancer.
