Causes of short cervix in pregnant women

The uterus is a very important reproductive organ for women. It can be said that the uterus is the cradle of life. A healthy uterus will make the entire pregnancy process of women very smooth and easy. On the contrary, it will bring many difficulties to pregnancy. For example, a short cervix in pregnant women is one of the major factors affecting pregnancy. Let’s take a look at the reasons for a short cervix in pregnant women. I hope everyone can understand it.

Causes of short cervix

1. Generally speaking, the length of the cervical canal is the result of a woman's own development. In other words, it may be a symptom caused by congenital maldevelopment.

2. A short cervix in a pregnant woman may mean that there is a problem with her birth canal. In this case, an ultrasound examination can be used to measure the length of the cervix, which can ultimately help prevent the symptoms caused by the condition in the pregnant woman and take early measures to avoid the occurrence of adverse risks. Precautions

1. Vaginal B-ultrasound to detect the length of the cervix. If the length of the internal cervical os funnel is greater than 25% of the total length of the cervix, or the length of the functional internal cervical os is less than 30 mm, it indicates a high possibility of premature birth; test fetal fibronectin. For pregnant women who are determined to be at risk of premature birth, it is best for them to rest in bed first, which can increase blood flow to the uterus and placenta and improve placental function. Secondly, under the guidance of a doctor, you can use some drugs to inhibit uterine contractions and promote fetal lung maturity.

2. After pregnancy, the length of the cervical canal will not shorten as the fetus grows. After the due date, the cervical canal will soften and become more mature. After normal uterine contractions start, the cervical canal will gradually shorten and open as the uterine muscle fibers contract. This is what we usually call cervical dilation. When the cervix is dilated to 10 crevices, it is fully dilated and you are ready to prepare for delivery.

What is the normal cervix size for pregnant women?

If the cervical length is greater than 30 mm, premature birth generally will not occur and it is considered normal. However, if it is less than this value, especially less than 25 mm, it indicates a greater possibility of premature birth. There was no significant difference in cervical length and cervical canal width among different gestational age groups in normal singleton pregnant women. The average cervical length was (36±5) mm, and the cervical canal width was (4±1) mm. The cut-off value is cervical length ≤ 26 mm.
