Causes and treatments of postpartum migraine

Many girls feel weak after giving birth, so Chinese girls have the habit of confinement after childbirth. However, some girls will experience headaches during the confinement period, and this condition becomes more and more severe and cannot be relieved. When the mother tells her family about this situation, everyone will be very worried and don’t know what to do or find a good solution. So, what are the causes of postpartum migraine? What is the treatment?

1. What is postpartum headache?

It is normal for women to experience some discomfort during the postpartum confinement period, among which headaches are common. Postpartum headaches not only make the mother feel uncomfortable, but also affect the baby's eating during breastfeeding.

Postpartum headache caused by insufficient blood and qi can lead to symptoms such as physical fatigue, sallow complexion, palpitations, and a thin and light tongue coating. If the postpartum headache is caused by blood stasis, there will be a needle-like pain, accompanied by bloating and pain in the lower abdomen, and a thin purple tongue coating. Postpartum body coldness and headache are caused by cold body.

When you have a postpartum headache, you should rest in bed in time and avoid being too tired. You can massage your head appropriately. The most common method is to massage the temples, which is very helpful in relieving headaches. Green tea contains substances that can improve migraines, and drinking a moderate amount of green tea can also relieve discomfort. In addition, mothers who have time can do some aerobic exercises to relieve headaches, such as doing yoga at home and listening to some light music.

If the above methods do not relieve the headache, you should seek medical attention immediately. Take some Chinese medicine or painkillers under the guidance of a doctor to relieve headaches.

2. Causes of postpartum headache

When it comes to the specific causes of postpartum headaches, we need to look at it from the perspectives of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.

1. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that postpartum headaches are caused by excessive blood loss and insufficient blood and qi after childbirth. Blood deficiency: headache caused by excessive blood loss and insufficient Qi and blood after childbirth; blood stasis: headache caused by retained lochia and poor blood circulation in postpartum women; cold evil: headache caused by physical weakness after childbirth and cold caused by wind and cold.

2. Western medicine perspective

Western medicine believes that postpartum headaches are caused by hormone levels in the body after delivery, or by spinal puncture during cesarean section.
