What does high progesterone during menstruation mean?

Progesterone is a type of sex hormone. Under normal circumstances, the progesterone content in the human body is not very high, but is at a relatively low level. However, some women may find during checkups that the progesterone level in their bodies is too high, especially when their menstruation is approaching. In this case, a doctor should be consulted. So, what does it mean if progesterone is too high during menstruation?

Progesterone is a sex hormone in the body, secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary. It can promote the endometrium from the proliferative phase to the delivery phase, preparing for the implantation of the fertilized egg. After pregnancy, it can also reduce uterine excitability and ensure the safety of the fetus. Usually, the situation of high progesterone is relatively rare, and the situation of low progesterone is generally more common. High progesterone indicates that the hormones in women are more active. Generally, there are two situations in which progesterone is high:

1. Progesterone levels are high in non-pregnant women

Non-pregnant women can carefully observe whether the progesterone value changes with the menstrual cycle and whether the progesterone value is high only during the menstrual period. If so, it is normal. If not, they need to go to the hospital for examination and treatment, because some diseases can also cause high progesterone levels, such as lipid ovarian tumors and corpus luteum cysts, as well as hydatidiform mole and chorionic cell carcinoma, etc. Moreover, female endocrine disorders can also lead to increased progesterone levels in women.

2. High progesterone in pregnant women

If a pregnant woman has high progesterone levels, the possibility of fetal maldevelopment should be considered, and she should go to the hospital for a check-up as soon as possible to clarify the condition. Because if the progesterone level is too high, it can cause deformities in key parts of the fetus such as the spine, anus, and limbs, and may also result in serious consequences such as a female turning into a male.

Moreover, excessive secretion of progesterone can cause adverse decidual reaction during pregnancy, affect the implantation and development of the fertilized eggs, and lead to miscarriage. There are two sources of progesterone during pregnancy: one is produced by the corpus luteum of the ovary, and the other is secreted by the trophoblast cells of the placenta. Generally, after 6-8 weeks of pregnancy, the production of progesterone by the corpus luteum of the ovary gradually decreases, and is then replaced by progesterone produced by the placenta. If the connection between the two is out of balance, miscarriage is likely to occur. Therefore, whether the progesterone level is too high or too low, it can easily lead to miscarriage.

Note: If a woman's progesterone levels have always been relatively normal, then she can just lead a healthy life as usual and there is no need for special supplements. If the progesterone level is too high, you should eat less hormonal drugs and foods such as birth control pills, soy, royal jelly, etc., which can reduce the production of progesterone. You should also pay attention to drinking more water, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, resting in bed more, avoiding fatigue, and maintaining physical and mental happiness, which will help the health of your body and fetus.
