Is it normal to have more vaginal discharge after childbirth?

Mothers who have just given birth will discharge some brown liquid from time to time during the confinement period. This is lochia and it is normal because the uterus needs to recover slowly. During this period, you must pay attention to the hygiene of your genitals, take a warm bath instead of a soaking bath, and change your underwear frequently. Another symptom after childbirth is increased vaginal discharge, which is generally related to gynecological inflammation. So how should you care if you have excessive vaginal discharge?

What is the reason for excessive vaginal discharge after childbirth? After giving birth, there are always some problems during the confinement period. Some are normal, and some require attention.

1. Genital tract inflammation. In cases of acute endometritis, acute and chronic cervicitis, nonspecific vaginitis, gonorrhea, candidal vaginitis, and Trichomonas vaginitis, the leucorrhea is not only abundant in amount, but also may have changes in color and odor, and is often accompanied by itching, burning sensation, pain during sexual intercourse, and lower abdominal pain.

2. Postpartum infection. After delivery, the mother is weak and the cervix has not fully recovered. For example, delivery may cause damage to the birth canal or there may be residual placenta or fetal membranes; or if the mother has excessive sexual intercourse, pathogens may invade the uterine cavity, which may easily cause infection.

3. Sexual viral infection. Abnormal postpartum leucorrhea may be caused by sexually transmitted virus infection of the cervix, vagina and vulva, or Candida albicans infection.

The cause of excessive leucorrhea after childbirth is usually caused by postpartum inflammation, such as fungal vaginitis, bacterial vaginitis, Trichomonas vaginitis, senile vaginitis, etc. At this time, you should go to the hospital for examination in time, strengthen your physical fitness, do appropriate exercise, and if found, seek treatment in time. Do not take medicine without authorization. Sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited during treatment. Pay attention to the cleanliness of the genitals. During treatment, couples must be treated at the same time to achieve the effect of complete cure.

Moreover, in terms of dressing, you should avoid wearing tight jeans and tight nylon underwear. Choose cotton underwear instead.

When women find that they have too much vaginal discharge, physical exercise to strengthen their physical fitness is also a good way to deal with the excessive vaginal discharge. Getting enough sleep, eating a proper diet, balanced nutrition, and eating more foods rich in vitamins can all help recover from the condition.

In addition, use sanitary pads less often and keep your vulva breathable. Frequent use of sanitary pads will make it easier for bacteria to grow. So when you are not menstruating, try not to use sanitary pads. Wash your vulva with clean water every night and change your underwear. You should also use less of various liquid medicines to clean the vagina, as doing so will damage the internal environment of the vagina and make it more likely to cause vaginitis.

In addition, regular gynecological examinations should be performed. Even if there is no discomfort after treatment of abnormal leucorrhea, regular examinations should be performed. It is best to have a comprehensive gynecological examination at least once a year. Maintaining a happy mood in daily life and avoiding excessive excitement, anger and impatience can help prevent the occurrence of various gynecological inflammations.

Finally, experts from Xi'an Gynecological Hospital remind: abnormal postpartum leucorrhea is a gynecological problem that many women will encounter. Some are due to too much pressure from life and work, the fatigue of taking care of children and family, and less rest time, which leads to low resistance and excessive leucorrhea. However, as long as it is not pathological, it can be restored to normal through adjustments in life.
