Will I be constipated when I'm pregnant?

There are actually two types of constipation in medicine, one is functional constipation and the other is organic constipation. Both are normal. Will you be constipated during pregnancy? In fact, it does happen, and it is a normal phenomenon. However, this situation needs to be changed during pregnancy. You should eat more vegetables and fruits, eat more delicious food, and drink more water. These are all good for constipation during pregnancy and are also beneficial to your health!

1. Causes of constipation during pregnancy

Constipation can be divided into functional constipation and organic constipation. Functional constipation is mostly caused by lack of defecation motivation (such as weak abdominal muscles or levator ani muscles), colon spasm, eating too little, lack of water, lack of fiber in food, slow or absent rectal defecation reflex, and no regular bowel movement habit. Organic constipation is mostly caused by partial intestinal obstruction (such as intestinal adhesions), megacolon, extraintestinal diseases compressing the intestines, and rectal and anal diseases (such as hemorrhoids). After pregnancy, gastric acid secretion decreases, the tension of gastrointestinal smooth muscles decreases, and peristalsis weakens. At the same time, due to the weakening of abdominal wall muscle tension, the large intestine's absorption of water increases, pregnant women are more likely to suffer from constipation. Constipation in pregnant women is mainly functional constipation. Pregnant women suffering from constipation can take the following measures: drink honey water. Eat more fruits, vegetables and other foods rich in vitamins. If the condition is more serious, you can use enema or glycerin suppository. It must be done under the guidance of a doctor. It is strictly forbidden to use laxatives, especially in the late pregnancy, to prevent miscarriage.

2. Precautions for constipation during pregnancy

①In your case, the first thing to do is to actively treat your constipation. If a pregnant woman already suffers from constipation, she should try not to use laxatives, because most laxatives may cause uterine contractions and lead to miscarriage, and some laxatives have certain toxic side effects that may affect fetal development. Suggestions: Mainly, use appropriate Chinese medicine treatment when necessary, or use Western medicine enema treatment with small toxic and side effects.

② It is recommended to do proper exercise, mainly slow walking (not for too long), eat small meals frequently, drink plenty of water, and eat more vegetables and fruits. Get up around 7 o'clock every morning, drink a cup of warm water first, then go to the toilet for about ten minutes and squat for about five minutes to do bowel movements. Do this for two or three days, and your gastrointestinal motility will return to normal, and constipation will slowly get better.
