Can I get pregnant with an IUD?

The main reason why many women choose to wear an IUD is for contraception, so it is obvious that wearing an IUD will definitely affect pregnancy, but everyone needs to have a correct understanding of the IUD. The success rate of this method of contraception is indeed very high, but it is definitely not 100%. Especially after wearing an IUD, you must be alert to ectopic pregnancy. The following will introduce the impact of the IUD on pregnancy.

Can I get pregnant with an IUD?

No contraceptive method is 100% effective. For example, the effectiveness of tubal ligation is 99%, the effectiveness of oral contraceptives is 98%, and the effectiveness of IUD insertion is 80-90%, which means that 10-20% of women become pregnant with an IUD.

Why does pregnancy with an IUD occur? The reasons may be: the ring has fallen off and the woman did not notice it; the ring is located low in the uterine cavity, close to the cervical opening, and cannot inhibit the implantation and development of the fertilized egg; the size of the ring is not suitable for the size of the uterine cavity, or the ring has been deformed and has lost its contraceptive effect; the endometrium does not respond to the contraceptive ring and cannot achieve the contraceptive effect, etc.

The most common of these is pregnancy after IUD removal. Now that the ring has been put in, how could it fall out? It turns out that the ring is a foreign body to the uterus. The rejection function of the uterus causes the uterine muscles to contract continuously in an attempt to expel the ring. At this time, you may experience lower back pain, abdominal pain, increased leucorrhea, and increased menstrual volume. Therefore, rejection and ring fall-off are most likely to occur within the first few months after the ring is placed. If the ring does not fall off, over time, the uterus will slowly adapt and coexist peacefully with the ring. The longer the time, the less likely it is to fall off.

Will the IUD be embedded in the uterus and cannot be removed?

Many women are worried that if the IUD is left in place for such a long time, it may become embedded in the uterine muscle wall. In fact, this worry is unnecessary. This is because the IUD is placed in the uterus, not attached to the uterine muscle wall. The endometrium undergoes a cyclical change of shedding, bleeding, expulsion and regeneration every month, so the IUD will not be fixed on the endometrium, nor will it grow in the myometrium, and therefore, it will not be embedded in the uterus.

It is now believed that stainless steel metal rings can be used for 15-20 years; other types of IUDs such as silicone, plastic or copper can be used for 5-7 years. Some experts in China took samples of the endometrium for pathological examination when removing the IUD, and compared them with those of those who did not have the IUD, and found no difference between the two. Therefore, if there is no other discomfort after the IUD insertion, there is no need to worry.
