What does high hcg mean

Hcg is not unfamiliar to many pregnant mothers. During the prenatal check-up, the hcg value is one of the must-check items, because the hcg value can largely serve as an important criterion for whether a woman is pregnant or whether the baby is developing healthily. Whether the Hcg value is too low or too high, it can indicate certain problems. Below we will introduce the relevant knowledge about hcg value in detail for your reference!

1. What is the hcg value

The hcg value is also called human chorionic gonadotropin. Generally, the HCG radioimmunoassay value of a normal person is less than 5. If it exceeds 5, the possibility of conception can be considered. If it exceeds 10, pregnancy can be basically confirmed.

HCG can rise to greater than 2500IU/L 35-50 days after pregnancy. The urine HCG level in women with multiple pregnancies is often higher than that in women with single pregnancies. Serum HCG should return to normal 9 days after delivery or 25 days after artificial abortion. Early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is mainly based on the detection of blood HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Because HCG is a specific hormone secreted during pregnancy, HCG can be used to assist in the diagnosis of early unruptured ectopic pregnancy.

The amount of HCG secreted by normally developing villi is very large, and the daily titer continues to rise rapidly, increasing by more than 66% every 48 hours.

If HCG is difficult to confirm, blood progesterone can be used for auxiliary diagnosis. It is well recognized that patients with ectopic pregnancy have low blood progesterone levels. Therefore, it can be used as one of the early diagnosis methods.

2. What is the reason for high hcg value

Elevated serum HCG levels are most common in early pregnancy in women of childbearing age.

1. After a normal person becomes pregnant, the HCG content in the blood increases rapidly, reaching its peak at 60-80 days of pregnancy, with a peak value of 10,000-12,000 μg/L, and then gradually decreases to the lowest at 160-180 days of pregnancy, but still significantly higher than normal, and then rises slightly and continues to maintain until delivery;

2. In twin pregnancy, serum HCG is more than doubled compared to single pregnancy;

3. In case of ectopic pregnancy, serum HCG is lower than the normal pregnancy value during the same period.

A high Hcg value indicates that there is a high possibility of pregnancy, but there is also the possibility of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy not only affects the fetus, but also harms the health of the pregnant woman.

3. What does low hcg value mean?

Not all low HCG values are a problem. Because many normal pregnancies do not necessarily have high hCG.

Of course, in addition to ectopic pregnancy, there are two other reasons for low HCG values: delayed ovulation or poor embryo development. If it is an ectopic pregnancy, the gestational sac will be seen outside the uterine cavity during B-ultrasound. Please check B-ultrasound to confirm.

No matter how low the HCG value is, it cannot confirm ectopic pregnancy. B-ultrasound is the most valuable for detecting ectopic pregnancy. B-ultrasound has been used in clinical practice for many years, and there is no record of fetal harm. If an ectopic pregnancy is misdiagnosed, the harm can be considerable. Weighing the pros and cons, you can do an ultrasound examination.

If pregnant, 85% of pregnant women will have their blood hCG level double every two or three days. If hCG does not increase at this rate, it means pregnancy has failed.
