Can I have an IUD inserted directly after an abortion? Things to know about IUD insertion

It is precisely because of the lack of contraceptive measures that the phenomenon of unexpected pregnancy occurs. Many women choose to have an abortion and want to have an IUD inserted after the abortion. In fact, it is not recommended to have an IUD inserted immediately after the abortion. Wait until the body has almost recovered before inserting the IUD, so as to avoid some side effects.

1. Can I have an IUD inserted directly after having an abortion?

It is not possible to have an IUD inserted directly after an abortion. You need to wait at least one month after the abortion until the uterus recovers before inserting an IUD. Inserting an IUD too early is not conducive to the recovery of the uterus and can easily cause inflammation, bleeding, menstrual disorders and other phenomena.

2. Things to note before having an IUD inserted

IUD insertion is an invasive surgical procedure and improper operation can easily cause complications such as infection and bleeding. Therefore, the precautions before having an IUD inserted cannot be ignored. The following six points should be noted before getting an IUD:

1. Perform a comprehensive physical examination, gynecological examination, blood test and vaginal discharge examination. In particular, it is necessary to understand whether there are any contraindications, such as breast-feeding, multiple or recent history of artificial abortion and cesarean section, and history of long-term use of contraceptives.

2. Avoid sexual intercourse and bathing 3 days before IUD insertion to avoid infection.

3. Take a bath (shower) one day before the IUD insertion, clean the vulva on the day of the operation, and bring sanitary napkins, panty liners and other necessary items.

4. Measure vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, etc. Those with abnormalities shall not be allowed to remain in the room. Body temperature must not exceed 37.5℃.

5. Urinate on your own before inserting the IUD.

6. If you have any special circumstances, please consult a doctor.

3. Pay attention to the best time to get the IUD before getting it

1. Place it when menstruation has not yet ended. It should be placed on the 3rd to 5th day of menstruation. There are three advantages during this period: first, the cervix is loose and easy to insert. Secondly, since menstruation has just arrived, pregnancy can be ruled out and the ring will not be mistakenly placed in a pregnant uterus. Third, it avoids the concerns and inconveniences caused to women by the small amount of bleeding after the IUD is inserted.

2. Place it after menstruation is over. It is best to have the IUD inserted 3-7 days after the menstruation ends and when there is no sexual history, because at this time the endometrium is just beginning to grow and is thinner, so bleeding can be avoided during insertion. At the same time, not having sexual intercourse after menstruation also avoids the possibility that the fertilized egg has grown on the endometrium when the IUD is inserted. Generally, most women choose to have the IUD inserted at this time.

3. Insert the IUD immediately after delivery. At this time, the insertion operation is simple and easy, and contraceptive measures can be implemented in time, but it must be inserted after examination and approval by an obstetrician.
