Is low progesterone serious?

Is low progesterone serious?

I believe everyone knows what progesterone is. Progesterone is a natural hormone that is secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary. Progesterone plays a very important role for female friends, so we recommend that female friends check their progesterone regularly during pregnancy. If any abnormal progesterone is found, it should be taken seriously. Below we will introduce to you how serious low progesterone is.

Adverse effects

The main function of the corpus luteum is to secrete progesterone, estrogen and relaxin. Most cases of low progesterone (insufficient progesterone secretion) are caused by luteal insufficiency. Progesterone mainly acts on the endometrium, causing secretory changes in the uterus, which is very necessary for the implantation of the fertilized egg and the maintenance of pregnancy. If progesterone is not secreted sufficiently, the secretory changes of the endometrium will be adversely affected.

In clinical practice, through endometrial biopsy, it is often found that some infertile women have poor secretory function, which is not conducive to the implantation of the fertilized egg. Even if the fertilized egg implants, insufficient progesterone secretion can cause miscarriage or fetal arrest. According to statistics, 3% to 4% of women's infertility is caused by low progesterone (luteal insufficiency).

Low progesterone supplementation

To supplement the deficiency of progesterone in the body, progesterone is generally injected intramuscularly and progesterone acetate is taken orally. Human chorionic gonadotropin can also be used to promote corpus luteum function. However, it should be noted that not everyone's physique is suitable for progesterone drugs. Some expectant mothers may experience adverse reactions, so it must be used under the guidance of a doctor.

Use progesterone to maintain pregnancy with caution

The amount of progesterone in a pregnant woman's body is directly related to whether the pregnancy can proceed normally. This is mainly because a sufficient amount of progesterone can not only ensure the normal function of the endometrium and promote the growth and development of the embryo, but also has the effect of anti-rejection and inhibiting uterine contraction, thereby ensuring that the fetus can grow and develop smoothly in the uterus until full term.

Progesterone is not a panacea for preserving pregnancy. It is only suitable for patients with miscarriage caused by progesterone deficiency. Progesterone cannot be used for preserving pregnancy treatment for miscarriage caused by fetal maldevelopment or abnormalities due to adverse genetic factors, environmental factors, maternal diseases, or fetal death in utero.

In the above article, we introduced what progesterone is. We know that progesterone is actually a natural hormone. If female friends have symptoms of low progesterone, they should pay attention to it. Therefore, it is recommended that everyone must pay attention to it in life and make relevant preparations. In addition, if there is a problem of low progesterone, it will cause many problems.
