TCM treatment for postpartum abdominal pain

(1) Blood deficiency type: symptoms include dull pain in the lower abdomen after delivery, pain that is relieved by pressing, light-colored lochia, dizziness, tinnitus, dry stool, pale red tongue with thin coating, and weak and thready pulse. Treatment should be aimed at nourishing blood and replenishing Qi.

(2) Blood stasis type: symptoms include lower abdominal pain after delivery, resistance to pressure, or slight relief of fever symptoms, small amount of lochia, sluggish and unsmooth lochia, dark purple color with lumps, or chest and flank pain, pale face, cold limbs, dark tongue, white and slippery tongue coating, and deep, tight or stringy pulse. The treatment is suitable for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, dispelling cold and relieving pain.

Method 1: Cinnamon and brown sugar decoction Ingredients: 6 grams of cinnamon, 12 grams of brown sugar.

Usage: decoct the above two ingredients in water and take it 3 times a day for 5 consecutive days.

Efficacy: Nourishes blood and replenishes Qi, dispels cold and relieves pain.

Indications: abdominal pain after childbirth, blood deficiency type, dull pain in the lower abdomen after childbirth, likes warmth and massage, cold hands and feet, small amount of lochia, light color.

Note: Modern reports show that cinnamon has central and peripheral vasodilator effects, which can enhance blood circulation. The cinnamon oil contained in cinnamon has a mild stimulating effect on the gastrointestinal tract, which can enhance digestive function, eliminate gas in the digestive tract, and relieve gastrointestinal spasms.

Method 2: Red Bean and Pumpkin Powder

Ingredients: 100 grams of red beans, 30 grams of ginger, and 200 grams of pumpkin.

Usage: Roast the above three ingredients together, grind into fine powder, take 3 times a day, 30 grams each time.

Efficacy: Nourishes blood and relieves pain.

Indications: abdominal pain after childbirth, which belongs to blood deficiency type, dull cold pain in the lower abdomen after childbirth, likes to rub, pale complexion, dizziness and tinnitus, and small amount of light-colored lochia.

Method 3 Red Bean Carp

Ingredients: 50 grams of red beans, 1 live carp (about 500 grams), 5 grams of tangerine peel, 5 grams of chrysanthemum, and appropriate seasoning.

Usage: Cut open the belly of a living carp and clean it. Stuff red beans, tangerine peel, yellow floret and seasonings into the belly of the carp. Add chicken soup and steam it in a steamer over high heat for 1 hour before removing from the steamer.

Efficacy: Nourishes blood, regulates qi and relieves pain.

Indications: Postpartum abdominal pain, which belongs to blood deficiency type, dull distension and pain in the lower abdomen after delivery, likes to rub the area, pale complexion, dizziness and tinnitus.
