Can I do strenuous exercise during my period?

The menstrual period is when the endometrium sheds and bleeds. Women’s bodies are relatively weak and they need more rest and to keep warm. Vigorous exercise is inappropriate during menstruation, as it may cause retrograde menstrual blood flow and lead to gynecological diseases such as endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, and irregular menstruation. Vigorous exercise is not allowed, but moderate exercise is still possible. Some physical exercises that require little activity and gentle movements can promote blood circulation, relieve abdominal distension and pain, distract attention, maintain mental pleasure, and relieve negative emotions.

During menstruation, strenuous exercise such as high jump, long jump, running, playing football, etc. can induce or aggravate general discomfort during menstruation, and even cause dysmenorrhea and menstrual disorders. Some strength exercises that increase abdominal pressure, such as weightlifting and dumbbells, should also be avoided as much as possible, otherwise they will cause excessive menstruation or prolonged menstruation.

In addition, since the cervix is slightly open during menstruation, bacteria can easily invade the uterine cavity, increasing the chance of infection and causing various gynecological inflammations. Therefore, swimming is not suitable during menstruation. It is also not advisable to participate in competitions during menstruation, so as to avoid endocrine disorders and menstrual disorders due to excessive mental stress. For girls with severe dysmenorrhea and genital inflammation, it is best to suspend physical exercise during menstruation.

When it comes to health care during menstruation, you must keep warm, pay attention to your diet, avoid eating raw or cold food, get more rest, etc. At the same time, menstrual hygiene is also very important. Menstrual blood can easily breed bacteria, especially in the hot summer, so you must change your tampons frequently. Even if the amount is small, you should change them every two or three hours to ensure the dryness and cleanliness of your vagina.
